2. The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps ProjectPerhaps the worlds
longest mosaic staircase was conceived and fabricated by
Irishceramicist Aileen Barr and San Francisco mosaic artist Colette
Crutcher.Over a two and a half year period, a tireless group of
neighbors raised funds andlobbied City government to make the
project, unveiled in August 2005, a reality.Artists Aileen Barr and
Colette Crutcher led the creation of the 163 mosaic panelsthat were
applied to the step risers, over 300 neighbors joined us in making
them, and over 220 neighbors sponsored handmade animal, bird and
fish name tilesimbedded within the mosaic. The City permitting
process was completed on August18, 2004. KZ Tile, a major San
Francisco tile setting company, generously agreed toset the mosaic
panels into the risers and tile the step treads with rough, nonslip
tile.We completed the installation of the Project in August 2005,
with the exception of thecaulking, which will be done in early
September 2005.As you can see, the result is simply amazing! The
beautiful pictures were taken byvarious flickr users. The 16th
Avenue Tiled Steps project has been a neighborhood effort to create
abeautiful mosaic running up the risers of the 163 steps located at
16th and Moragain San Francisco. Sponsored by the San Francisco
Parks Trust, artists Aileen Barr andColette Crutcher started
working on the project in January of 2003. The mosaicstaircase was
completed on August 18, 2004 with the help of over 300 neighbors,
andover 220 neighbors who sponsored handmade animal, bird and fish
