The Cuisine of Trinidad
Trinidad is probably most famous for its Carnival celebration every year. What else makes this
little island well-known is the unbelievable cuisine. With so many different cultures present on
the island, you could go a month and not eat the same thing twice. There is a plethora of
restaurants to choose from on the island for every flavor and occasion. Whatever you’re craving
to eat, Trinidad has you covered.
The Culinary World Tour
There are many ethnicities represented on the island and every group has brought their style of
cooking and food here. The food choices reflect the many heritages of the island. Some of the
foods you can find include: African, Asian, Indian, Spanish, Creole, French, Chinese, Middle Eastern
and Caribbean. Some of the newer restaurants have created fusions of some of these cuisines to
amp it up that much more.
Fine Dining to Street Vendors
In addition to the many cultures, Trinidad has many styles of restaurants. There are upscale, fine
dining places that specialize in one cuisine or a mix of a few. Home style restaurants are also
popular and they serve traditional Trinidian food. Popular items are stewed chicken, callaloo,
pelau, pigeon peas, macaroni pie and curried meats. If you’re in the mood for something a little
faster and more authentic, try one of the many street vendors. Street food is a huge part of the
Trinidad culture and you can find some of the island’s best food from a roadside vendor. Watch
out for the pepper! Trini’s love lots of pepper and chutney. Whichever you choose, you will feel
the Trini warmth and hospitality.
Breakfast and Dessert
Let’s not forget about breakfast and dessert, maybe two of the most important meals of the day!
Trinidad has amazing, mouthwatering breakfast specialties. Buljul, black pudding and souse are
some of the more popular breakfast items, washed down with coconut water served in the shell.
Yummy desserts include homemade ice cream, flavorful sno cones, barfi (coconut fudge) and
goolabjamoom (milk balls in sweet syrup.)
