Aluthgama is the major city near several popular beach resorts such as Bentota, Induruwa and Beruwala in the west coast of Sri Lanka. This bustling city offer shops and stalls to buy virtually everything that you need for the day to day life
In Sri Lanka regular unstrained yogurt (dahi or curd), made from cow or water buffalo milk, it is often sold in disposable clay bowls called kulhar. Kept for a couple of hours in its clay pot, some of the water evaporate through the unfired clay's pores. It also cools the curd due to evaporation
Aluthgama is best known as a tourist city due to the gathering of foreigners. But Aluthgama is best known among the tourists for the weekly market. It is a typical authentic local market and very interesting experience for the foreigners. However if you visit the market on any other day of the week you have the calm and quite atmosphere and still possibility to buy various types of goods in the low crowded shops
The people of the surrounding area gather here on the day of the market to buy things such as books, toys, souvenir, plastic items, music, vegetable, fruits, groceries, clothing and antiques.
Aluthgama is great for fishing with a large river flowing into the sea. This river, the Benthota River (or Benthota Ganga in the local language - Sinhalese) at its estuary offers excellent fishing. Casting plugs 'shallow swimming floaters' around 7 - 8 inches and about 1 to 2 ozs, since it is a shallow lagoon/river mouth, will at the right time of year yield some excellent catches
The meals of the southern region of Sri Lanka are known for their variety and fishing village though the coastal strip.
In the Sri Lankan diet, fish forms the most important source of animal protein and about 70% of the animal proteins consumed in Sri Lanka come from fish. Freshwater fishery constitutes 20% to the total fish production of the country and, more importantly, it provides the principal source of proteins to the inhabitants in the non-coastal regions of the country.
Bananas come in a variety of sizes and colors when ripe, including yellow, purple, and red. Almost all modern edible parthenocarpic bananas come from the two wild species Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana. Banana (Musa spp.) is the most widely cultivated and consumed fruit in Sri Lanka. It is also an attractive perennial fruit crop for farmers due to its high economic gains throughout the year. When consider the production it is the 4th important crop in the world. As well as 2nd important fruit crop in the world. Sri Lanka has got 18 different types of bananas (It was actually 24 varieties, but now inly a few varieties can be found).
The weekly market is a leading attraction in the city of Aluthgama and attended by large number of street vendors and farmers in the area. People love to make their purchases at the weekly market due to the very affordable prices resulted in the concurrence of the vendors. The quality and freshness of the food is also at very high level at the weekly market than the regular city market of AluthgamaThe visitors can smell the various fast food items such as grilled wade, fish cutlet, egg cutlet, fish bun, through the street market enticing the visitors to taste them
The city of Alutgama spread along the main road of Galle-Colombo. Majority of the shops, bars, restaurants and other important places are located by the side of the road. The city ends at the banks of Bentota River towards the southern ends of the city. Just beyond the river is the Bentota tourist resort area where large number of tourist hotel, restaurant, sport center, shops and recreation facilities are located
