What is Monorail?

• A monorail (mono : single) is a guideway-basedtransportation system based on a single guidewaybeam,which acts as its sole support and its guideway.

• Mostly elevated, monorails can also run at grade or insubway tunnels.

• Vehicles are either suspended type or straddle type.

• Monorail vehicles are WIDER than the guide-waythat supports them.

INTRODUCTION TO THE PROJECT

• The Mumbai Monorail is a rapid transit system

under construction in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

• Project Idea: (MMRDA) Mumbai Metropolitan

Region Development Authority

• The project began in January 2009, and the first

line is expected to open in August 2013.

History

• Vilasrao Deshmukh, the then Chief Minister

of Maharashtra, cleared the notification for construction

of a monorail system in Mumbai on 18 August 2008.

• The project is being implemented by Mumbai

Metropolitan Region Development

Authority (MMRDA), with a consortium of Larsen &

Toubro (L&T) and a Malaysian infrastructure firm Scomi

Engineering.

2011. (Due to delays, the first portion of the line,

between Chembur and Wadala, is now expected to be

Owner and financer of the project : MMRDA

• The project is being implemented by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority

(MMRDA), with a consortium of Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and a Malaysian infrastructure firm

Scomi Engineering

• The two shortlisted consortia to build the line were Bombardier Transportation, Reliance Energy in

association with Hitachi Monorail, and Larsen and Toubro with Scomi Rail of Malaysia. On 11

November 2008, the winner was announced to be Larsen and Toubro along with Scomi, who

received a 24.6 billion (US$450 million) contract to build and operate the monorail until 2029.

• Total Project cost: Line 1 (Mumbai Monorail)-- Chembur – Wadala – Jacob Circle/Saat Raasta Rs

27.16 billion (US$500 million)

• The cost of setting up the monorail service is roughly 850 million (US$16 million) per km. The

complete network of about 135 km is recommended for development from year 2011 to 2031 in

phases at the total cost of 200 billion.[19]

Labour And Facilities

• 350 Labours are appointed between Belapur to Kharghar which consists of

Skilled as well as non skilled labours.

• Wages : 200 – 250 per day (Approx)

• The 3.9m high and 2.9m wide coach will have longitudinal seating arrangement

for maximizing the capacity. The trains will run on standard gauge of 1,435mm

with speeds ranging between 35-85km/h.

• The planned communication systems include Close Circuit TV, public

information display systems, radio systems, telephones and public

announcements.

• A continuous automatic train control system is also planned. It will provide

automatic supervision, protection and operation of the trains
