KISH ISLAND, IRAN

GeographyKish is part of Hormoz Province of Iran and is
located in Persian Gulf, just a 19 km (12 miles) away from the mainland of Iran and is covered by an
area of approximately 55.3 km2 (35 miles2). The length of the boundary of Kish is 40 km
(25 miles). The shape of island is elliptical. Along Kish's coast are coral reefs and many other small islands. The length of island from west to east is 15.45 km (
9.77 miles). The maximum width extending from the south to north is 7.5 km
( 4.7 miles). The surface of the island largely is flat.

The artifacts found during
archaeological excavations reveal that urbanization started more than 1000 years ago
that continued till 16th century AD.
Kariz has an area of 10,000 square meters. It is being renovated
these days for the amusement of its
visitors.
Kariz (Qanat) was used to provide
potable water called “sweet water” for the citizens of Kish. It is 16 meters deep and has an 8 meter high ceiling covered by fossils, shelves and
corals. The aqueducts are over 2,000 years
old.

1000 YEARS OLD REMAINS OF KISH CITY KNOWN AS HARIREH
The remains located in the center of the northern coastline cover an area of 3 square kilometers.
Harireh City – evidences the existence of a large and cultivated city.
Ancient City - Harireh.

Remains indicate a great and flourishing city of Harireh.
The houses of Kish were high and the island had palm groves and qanats full of drinking water.
The majority of Kish people were merchants, pearl-fishers and
fishermen.
The archaeologists discovered palatial houses, ancient port, hammams (baths) and a mosque in Harireh.
Sheikh Sa’adi, Marco Polo and Ibn Battuta either traveled through Kish or mentioned it in their writings.
