“Sauble” – it means “perfect vacation” in any language!

Originally was named “Riviere au Sable, ” (River to the Sand) in the 1800’s by the French Canadian

Voyageurs. Eventually the name was shortened to “Sable” (pronounced “sah-bleh) and spelled phonetically as “Sauble.” There is over 11 kilometres of sand beach, making it the second longest freshwater beach in the world. It was created by unique sandbar deposits making the water warm and shallow, safe swimming, kiting and boating is available to the whole family. A mix of coastline, highlands, islands, open fields, thick woods and wetlands makes Grey and Bruce ideal for bird-watching year-round. The Bruce Peninsula is a natural funnel for

migratory and nesting birds. Raptors can easily be spotted circling the tip of the Peninsula making their last stop before crossing to Manitoulin Island and continuing north. Vast tracts of undisturbed natural areas in Grey Bruce, including Kolapore Uplands, Bruce Peninsula National Park and Greenock Swamp are perfect places for bird watching.

Saugeen First Nation…on the sandy shores of beautiful Lake Huron

The Ojibway heritage is rich in colour and expression. The public is invited to sample the Saugeen Ojibway’s

cultural heritage and experience their gracious hospitality. A visit to the Saugeen Amphitheatre in July and August will allow an opportunity to experience firsthand the Ojibway culture by participating in workshops and other programs. Stop in at the Little Barn Craft Shop, which carries an assortment of native crafts and art from throughout Ontario. Dancers from across the country participate in the annual Three Fires Confederacy, Pow Wow held the second weekend in August. Native dance, music,

traditional foods, handmade beadwork, quill baskets, black ash baskets and other handcrafted items are featured. The Saugeen First Nation Amphitheatre is located in the heart of the village of Saugeen and is one of the most fascinating outdoor theatres in the province. With just under a million tons of limestone and thousand of man-hours, this has been a work in progress since 1971. Adjacent to the amphitheatre are the rock gardens, which are very popular for weddings, photo sessions or just sitting awhile to enjoy nature. Visitors are welcome to hike one of the many nature trails that offer a unique excursion into the unrefined beauty of the

area. Rental of the amphitheatre can be arranged by calling Saugeen First Nation Economic Development office. Fishing the Saugeen River is a sport for all seasons, with over 2.5 miles of river for fishing and “you can eat the fish you catch.” South Sauble Beach is well known for its shallow sandy beach, perfect for a family outing. The park is one of the few beaches in Ontario that allows you to drive on the beachfront for several miles. A daily rate per vehicle is charged but is well worth it for the convenience of having all of your beach gear nearby. Washroom and change rooms are located throughout the beachfront for your convenience.

Lake Huron Shoreline’s quaint communities are extremely fortunate to sit among a juxtaposed landscape of

rolling farmers fields and sandy shorelines, .and we invite you to come and play in our back yard! A tantalizing playground for kids (and adults) of all ages, you will be delighted to take in the variety of activity that awaits your discovery. Known worldwide for our fabulous sunsets, relish the fact that this amazing spectacle will only be the icing on the cake! Surrounded by natural beauty, it only makes sense that a large majority of our activities take place outdoors. A popular favourite and a growing market, cyclists abound! The recently published Bruce County Cycling Routes is now on area Information Centre shelves to help all visiting cyclists navigate their way throughout the Bruce.

The brochures’ focus is predominantly ‘road routes’, but with an abundance of multi-use trails in the area, you’ll be sure to find the path to take that’s right for you. Whoever verbalized that ‘Life is a Beach’, was 100% correct! Our communities boast over 50km of sandy shoreline, and the diversity of beaches will also satisfy any desired activity performed beachside! Boardwalks, lighthouses, marinas and almost any water sport that can be imagined, are all popular fixtures along our coastline. Beautiful Lake Huron’s sparkling waters beckon, and we encourage you to take heed! If being ‘on’ the water rather than playing beside it is more your style, then paddling the beautifully scenic Saugeen River system is a must do for you! Meander the lazy river in a canoe, or try your hand at rougher waters along the route in a kayak!

Several local outfitters can accommodate even the most amateur or experienced of paddlers, including equipment rental and instruction. Visit our website (www.sunsets.com) for more detailed contact information for area retailers. Pick up your copy of Canoe & Kayak Routes for detailed route information, including campground accommodations found along the way! Aside from our natural beauty and outdoor activity, our region is also very well known for our extraordinary annual festivals and events. Such highly regarded events as Port Elgin Pumpkinfest, Kincardine Scottish Festival & Highland Games and Paisley Beef-fest, we have something for everyone and every age!

The Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre features an extensive history of Bruce County and all it entails.

On June 19, 2012 we will open “The HMS General Hunter/War of 1812 Feature Exhibit” which commemorates the 200th anniversary of the war between the U.S. and Britain/Canada. The General Hunter was a British Warship which fought in numerous actions during the War of 1812 before being lost to the U.S. Navy in the famous Battle of Lake Erie. In 1816, it was shipwrecked on the Southampton beach where it still lies buried in the sand.
