To most travelers, being called a tourist isn't a good
thing. The usual tourist stereotypes include being loud,
refusing to speak the local language, and having no
fashion sense.
A traveler is the opposite of a tourist. The next three
slides offer some guidance on how you can be a traveler
on your next trip.
WHAT'S WRONGWITH BEING A TOURIST?
LANGUAGE
If you're visiting a country that speaks a different
language, then it's important that you study the
language before you arrive.
You don't have to be fluent, but you should be able to
do the basics like order food and ask for directions.
While many people throughout the globe speak
English, this isn't always the case, and locals will
always appreciate it if you attempt to speak their
language.
When traveling to a new country, it's a good idea to
dress similarly to the locals since tourists are often
the target of crime.
Some countries have a conservative sense of fashion,
and if you dress flashy you might draw attention to
yourself. You also risk being denied entry to sites like
churches if you choose to not dress conservatively.
At the very least you should research how the locals
dress so that you're not surprised by anything.
FASHION
CULTURE
One of the best things you can do before you visit a
new destination is learn about the country's culture
and history.
Knowledge of the culture will lessen the amount of
culture shock you experience when you visit. It will
also help you avoid making any faux pas.
Asking locals is one of the best ways to learn about a
country. There are many websites where you can do
this. It's a great way to find out useful information
like which restaurants and locations are worth
visiting.
