Fun Things To Do In Roatan So you took a cruise of the Western Caribbean and absolutely fell in love with one of the islands. What is it called again? Roatan, off the coast of Honduras! This island paradise is still largely undiscovered by most accounts. It boasts miles of beautiful white sand beaches, lush jungle, mountains and extraordinary boutique hotels. The majority of visitors come on cruise ships, but for those who really want to see the island and do some Roatan diving a week is necessary. Beyond diving there are many things to do in Roatan. The island is easily accessible by one road which runs through the whole island. Start in West bay which is the western tip of the island with the most popular beach in Roatan. From there visit the bohemian village in the West End, with its many seaside bars and funky restaurants. Work your way to Sandy Bay and stop and see the dolphins (the most popular of all Roatan Tours ). The main business hub of the island is Coxen hole which harbours the Royal Caribbean cruise ship dock. If you are looking to see how locals live in Roatan this is the place. Finally start working your way to the East End of Roatan. After you pass French Harbour, the second largest commercial hub, the population density drops rapidly and you are left with miles of solitary jungle and breath taking mountain top views. Few people venture out to the East end which can make the journey very rewarding for the intrepid traveler. The city of Jonesville hosts an impressive system of Mangrove tunnels which you can navigate on a small motor powered canoe. Jonesville is known for its incredible island cuisine with the specialty being Macoy ( shrimp, lobster, chicken and iguana stewed in coconut milk). End your island tour off in the city of Oak Ridge, a large fishing village built on stilts in a bay. The majority of people on the east end make their living off fishing and you will find dozens of large shrimping and lobster boats in the Bay. The locals are very friendly and many speak English so you can enjoy their company. Inviting a local for a Salva Vida always does the trick! There is something to be said about just lying on the beach all day, or enjoying some Roatan diving but there is so much more. Roatan can offer you what ever you are looking for, but the best things to do in Roatan are always the spontaneous adventures.
