Confucius

By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; Second, by imitation, which

is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest.

-- Chinese philosopher & reformer (551 BC - 479 BC)

Introductory Remarks

Contemporary China is a Pandora’s box of surprises, mysteries, and contradictions. A Chinese born and U.S. naturalized middle-aged woman once remarked to me: “Life is hard in China.” Is it? Perhaps. Devastating earthquakes, chemical spills, diseases (SARs/Swine flu), competition for jobs, corruption, education, quality of life, rural/urban conflict, ethnic strife, growing wealth inequality, government intervention and control, political movements, and more typify life in China today.

Shanghai

Unlike many cities in China with long and varied histories, Shanghai's history is quite short. The British opened a concession in Shanghai after the first Opium War and ignited Shanghai's evolution. Once a small fishing village on the edge of the muddy Huang Pu River, it has become one of the world's most modern and sophisticated cities.
