Molokans in East L.A

The Molokans came to Boyle heights during the schismatic movement that shook the Russian orthodox church in the beginning of the modern era. They were exiled by the Russian government. Both Russian church and the state took an extreme attitude towards the schismatic movement

Molokan Religion

The molokans are a “biblically centered” religious movement among the, Russian peasants, who broke away from the orthodox church in the 1550’s. They also rejected many of the traditional beliefs (held by Roman Catholic, Protestants, and Orthodox Christians), including the veneration of Religious icons, worship in cathedrals, the adherence toward saintly holidays, and the decisions of Synod sand Ecumenical Councils.

They came to Boyle heights because of the vast amount of farmland and job opportunities. they faced and overcame many obstacles that have changed their lives, struggle the prejudice the Americans acted out against them.

In the early nineteen hundreds, the Los Angeles area was invaded by a massive wave of Mexican immigrants. The reason why Mexicans fled their homeland was because of the Mexican Revolution, which took place during the time period 1911- 192. One result of the war was the destruction of transportation and communication that the Mexican people had with other parts of the country.
