On the broad waterfront avenue (Strata Marina) stands the impressive church of the island’s patron saint, Saint Dionysios.

Chiar pe chei, (Strata Marina) se află impresionanta biserică închinată patronului spiritual al insulei, Sfântul Dionisie.

Built in 1708, it was renovated in 1764 and decorated with valuable icons, works by the Zakynthian painters Koutouzis and Doxaras. The church houses the coffin with the relic of the saint, which was translated here in 1717 from the Strofades monastery, where Dionysios had been buried.

Construită în 1708, a fost renovată în 1764 şi decorată cu icoane valoroase, executare de pictorii locali Koutouzis și Doxaras.Biserica adăposteşte relicvele sfântului Dionisie - patronul spiritual al insulei; sicriul a fost adus aici în 1717 de la mănăstirea Strofades, unde fusese îngropat Sfântul Dionisie

Dionysius of Zakynthos was born in 1547 on the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea. Before becoming a monk his name was Draganigos Sigouros He was educated by priests and became fluent in Greek, Italian, and Latin. He excelled in theology, became a monk in 1568, received his first degree of ordination as a priest in 1570 as Daniel; he later became hieromonk of Zakynthos and Strofades. In 1577 he was raised to Archbishop of Aegina and Poros and after a year abdicated from this dignity and settled in Zakynthos as an abbot of a monastery. In December 17, 1622 he fell asleep in the Lord.

Sfântul Dionysios s-a născut în Zakynthos în 1546, refuzând poziţia lui socială şi trăind numai în scopuri caritabile. Este protectorul insulei şi din acest motiv, în anul 1708 a fost construită biserica consacrată lui. Trupul Sfantului Dionysios se află in biserică şi foarte mulţi pelerini vin în fiecare an, pe 24 August, să se roage la sfintele moaşte.

The church is basilica and the tower bell is very similar to the  tower of  Saint Mark’s church in Venice, it is more than 40 metres high.

Arhitectura bisericii este bizantină, fără cupolă şi cu pereţii pictaţi foarte impresionant. Biserica este situată lângă port, în partea de sud a oraşului. Clopotniţa are peste 40m înălţime

Saint Nikolaos on the Mole is a church built in 1561. It's the city's oldest surviving Venetian building and claims great historical significance. The island's patron saint, Saint Dionysos, served in this church.

Sfântul Nikolaos pe Chei este o biserică construită în anul 1561. Este cea mai veche clădire în stil veneţian din oraş care a supravieţuit cutremurului devastator din 1953 și are o mare importanță religioasă şi istorică. Patronul spiritual al insulei, Sfântul Dionysos, a slujit în această biserică.
