If you look back on our history, we have always been good at the first part of our mission-- “saving people money.” But something interesting has happened recently. We have developed a much better understanding of the second half of our mission -- “live better.”

This is where our commitment to sustainability comes in. It has been the most powerful example of our company bringing together the two parts of our mission and unlocking the full potential of Wal-Mart.

Our customers desire products that are more efficient, last longer and perform better. They want to know the product’s entire lifecycle. They want to know the materials in the product are safe, that it is made well and is produced in a responsible way.

Climate & Energy

• Our long-term goal is to reach a day where all of our energy comes from a renewable source.

• We have set several benchmarks along the way to improve the energy efficiency of our stores and trucking fleet. Today we are working to:

– Make existing stores 20 percent more efficient in seven years– Make new stores up to 25 - 30 percent more efficient in four years– Make our truck fleet 25 percent more efficient in three years,

double in 10 years– Eliminate 20 million metric tons of greenhouse gas (GHG)

emissions from Walmart's global supply chain by the end of 2015.

Energy Use and GHG Management

All Walmart facilities and suppliers MUST:

• Monitor facility energy consumption, including fuel use for transportation as well as inside factory: including reviewing energy meters, (should be installed and not out of order) energy data, inventory of energy use, etc.

• GHG emissions inventory, all direct and indirect energy consumption. All should be monitored and documented.

• Meet all applicable local legal requirements for energy use and GHG emissions.
