  • Here we are with the last installment of this four-part article. The Simpsons Arcade Game (arcade, 1991) Released during The Simpsons TV series second season run, Konamis The Simpsons Arcade Game was yet another beat em up released in the wake of Double Dragon and Final Fight. As with most of these games in this genre, they each tried to differentiate themselves with their own set of gameplay gimmicks. While Simpsons Arcade certainly had its fair share of those (most prominently, its team-up attacks which differed depending on which two characters were used and, furthermore, who initiated the tag team move), it obviously also gained a lot of mileage because of its association with the famed hit TV show. Years down the line, this game would be one of only three Simpsons video games (among twenty-five, at last count) that gamers deem worthy of playing, the other two being The Simpsons: Hit & Run and the simple-titledThe Simpsons Game. Both games are Grand Theft Auto-style sandbox games, which definitely added to their appeal. While you cant get the GTA-style games on the iPhone, you can download The Simpsons Arcade, so what are you waiting for?
  • Here we are with the last installment of this four-part article. Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis, 1991) Ah, the mascot that singlehandedly put Sega in serious contention with eventual 16-bit-wars winner Nintendo. While Nintendo may have come out on top, theres no denying that Segas blue hedgehog was a force to be reckoned with. Jumpstarting the mascots with attitude trend (for better or worse), Sonic the Hedgehog displayed what the Genesiss supposed blast-processing technology was capable of, by allowing players to blaze through the games stages at breakneck speeds; and if theres one thing the Sonic games are known for, its speed. The excellent sequel Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is also available for download for the iPhone. The third game in the main series is nowhere to be seen as of yet, though. However, both chapters of the recently released Sonic 4 are should you wish to experience old-school Sonic platforming with current-gen graphics.
  • Here we are with the last installment of this four-part article. X-Men (arcade, 1992) Konamis other noteworthy arcade beat em up aside from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the aforementioned Simpsons Arcade, X-Men was not based on the early 90s X-Men TV series as most people believe, but rather on the failed TV pilot X- Men: Pryde of the X-Men which came before it. Nevertheless, that doesnt detract from X-Menthe arcade games fun factor one bit. After all, where else could you find a game where you can hook up six cabinets to get six gamers playing simultaneously with an ultra-widescreen view of the playing field? While the iPhone download cant support six-player co-op, it should still be a fun experience.
  • Here we are with the last installment of this four-part article. Wolfenstein 3D (PC, 1992) The granddaddy of FPSes. Blazing guns. Hordes of enemies. 3D environment. Robot Hitler. Need I say more? The gameplay is definitely archaic compared to present standards (yes, even more archaic than Duke Nukem 3D), but for sheer nostalgic fun, this just cant be beat. And there you have it: Fifteen retro games that recall the fun of yesteryear, all available for downloading on theiPhone. If I have one gripe amidst this sea of gaming goodness, its that they havent made the venerable classicSuper Mario Bros. available yet. What a damn shame.
