In 2010, the Office of Management and Budget launched the Federal Data Center Consolidation Initiative (FDCCI), and since then federal agencies are scrambling to meet the 2015 deadline of closing 1,200 data centers. According to a new MeriTalk study, “The FDCCI Big Squeeze,” agencies are seeing real benefits – better use of IT staff, reduced energy consumption, and increased use of more efficient computing platforms. But while consolidation benefits are real, agencies are challenged to demonstrate quantifiable cost savings. The new study reveals that agencies are making promising consolidation progress with nearly three out of four Federal IT professionals reporting their agency has closed data centers; however, 50 percent do not believe that their agency will make the 2015 deadline.
