We are here And we are heading towards 3G

The 2.5th Generation of Mobile Technology

2.5G" is an informal term, invented solely for marketing purposes

2.5G describes the state of wireless technology and capability usually associated with General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) - that is, between the second and third generations of wireless technology.

The second generation or 2G-level of wireless is usually identified as Global System for Mobile (GSM) service and the third generation or 3G-level is usually identified as Universal Mobile Telecommunication Service (UMTS).

Each generation provides a higher data rate and additional capabilities.

These new features were High Speed Circuit Switched or HSCSD, General Packet Radio System or GPRS, EDGE or Enhanced Data Rates for Global Evolution

The Third Generation of Mobile Technology

Some Important TerminologiesUTMS:- Short for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System, a 3G mobile technology that will deliver broadband information at speeds up to 2Mbps.

Besides voice and data, UMTS will deliver audio and video to wireless devices anywhere in the world through fixed, wireless, and satellite systems.

UTRAN:- UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network, is a collective term for the Node B’s (Base Station) and Radio Network Controllers which make up the UMTS radio access network.

IMT 2000:- International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT--2000), better known as 3G or 3rd Generation, is a generation of standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunications services fulfilling specifications by the International Telecommunication Union

Today the technology is serving 25 countries over more than 60 networks having its existence in Asia, Europe and USA.

Aircel: Inching closer to 3G

As part of its 3G readiness tests, Aircel has tested a complete array of 3G services including voice and video calls at 64 kbps.

Meanwhile, applications like rich data services like downloading music, movies and pictures are tested between 384 to 1024 kbps.

On the high speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) front, Aircel has achieved speeds of up to 3.3 mbps.

According to company sources, this is adequate for HSDPA applications like downloading large volumes of business data and consumer applications like streaming movies online

Now get more & do more with 3G

Dare to think beyond 3G

The 4th Generation of Mobile Technology

• 4G refers to the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards.

• It is a successor to 3G and 2G families of standards

• This was followed, in 2002, by 3G multi-media support and soon expected to be followed by 4G

• It refers to all -IP packet-switched networks, mobile ultra-broadband (gigabit speed) access and multi-carrier transmission

What’s all there in 4G?A 4G system is expected to provide a comprehensive and secure all-IP based solution where following facilities are expected to provide to users:

• IP telephony – It is a Technology that use the Internet Protocol's packet-switched connections to exchange voice, fax, and other forms of information

• Ultra broadband access – It is a high speed mobile broadband with high bandwidth

• Roaming - Seamless connectivity and global roaming across multiple networks

• Streamed multimedia & Online mobile gaming – High definition video streaming and high resolution games can be played online

4G networks promises to make applications that were previously not feasible not only possible but ubiquitous. Examples of such applications include mobile high definition video streaming and mobile online gaming

How 4G is better than 3G?3G 4G

3G is successor to 2G 4G is successor to 3G

3G is currently used in more than 71 countries across world

As of now 4G is adopted by Japan, South Korea, Norway, Sweden and USA and in most of the countries, 4G is on testing phase

Data based servicesFollowing are the Data based technologies

• WAP – WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol. It allows users to access internet on their mobile phone. WAP support only WAP websites: websites written in, or dynamically converted to, WML (Wireless Markup Language) and accessed via the WAP browser

• GPRS – GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Services. is a packet oriented mobile data service available to all users of the 2G cellular communication.

Hence, it is possible to use HTML browsers with mobile phones.

GPRS can be used on both hand-held and computer, however this is not possible with WAP.

Data based servicesGPRS contd..Devices supporting GPRS are divided into three classes:• Class A

Can be connected to GPRS service and GSM service (voice, SMS), using both at the same time. Such devices are known to be available today.

• Class BCan be connected to GPRS service and GSM service (voice, SMS), but using only one or the other at a given time. During GSM service (voice call or SMS), GPRS service is suspended, and then resumed automatically after the GSM service (voice call or SMS) has concluded. Most GPRS mobile devices are Class B.

• Class CAre connected to either GPRS service or GSM service (voice, SMS). Must be switched manually between one or the other service.

Data based servicesEDGE: EDGE stands for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution.

EDGE delivered data services create a broadband internet-like experience for the mobile phone user.

EDGE is enhanced version of GPRS and 4 times as efficient as GPRS

EDGE was deployed on GSM networks beginning in 2003— initially by Cingular (now AT&T) in the United States

Summary:

• GPRS is a method of connecting to your provider while WAP is the protocol that runs on top of GPRS

• WAP is suited for GPRS only connections

• We can think of WAP as a toned down version of HTML while GPRS is a toned down version of dial-up

• WAP can also be used on EDGE and even on 3G connections

WiMAX

•WiMAX is also an acronym meaning "Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX).

• WiMAX is an IP based, wireless broadband access technology that provides performance similar to Wi-Fi networks with the coverage and QOS (quality of service) of cellular networks

• WiMAX is a wireless digital communications system, that is intended for wireless "metropolitan area networks“.

• WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access (BWA) up to 30 miles (50 km) for fixed stations, and 3 - 10 miles (5 - 15 km) for mobile stations
