• Women had no political rights.

• They had to completely obey their husbands.

• Women of higher class had more rights.

• Women’s sexuality was always regulated.

• If women did not wed then they were not permitted to live independently.

• Chastity before marriage was mandatory.

• Most women who were not married often joined a convent.

• Widows were often controlled by men who were not their husbands.

Social Status

• A few wealthy women had some power.

• Wealthy women were taught to be charming, and dressed in fine clothing.

• They had to be pleasing to look at.

• They were supposed to make their fathers and husbands look good and show off their social status.

• Women of all classes were expected to perform household duties.

• Peasant women worked with their husbands and at home.

• Wealthy women who were attended by servants still cooked, cleaned, sewed, and most importantly entertained.

Work Available for Women

• Women’s work was different from that of men.

• Women of the middle class who worked alongside their husbands could be dispossessed if widowed.

• Women were denied university education.• With no education women often worked for

low wages.

• Disobeying women were punished.

• Women were inferior to men.

• There was an increasing belief in households being run by men.

• The way women behaved was a very important instrument of social control.

Women ExecutedWomen Executed

• Executions of women accused of being witches grew from the years 1560-1670.

• They executed approximately 30,000 women.

• Women accused of being witches were given the same punishment as women who murdered their children.
