8 About Tivoli software from IBM

Executive summaryWith ever-increasing data growth worldwide, organizationsmust find smarter ways to store and manage their massive volumes of digital information. IBM Tivoli® storage manage-ment software solutions provide you with exceptional valueand functionality to maximize your current storage environ-ment and reduce operational and capital costs while improvingservice and managing risks. Flagship products such asIBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center, IBM Tivoli StorageManager, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack®, and

IBM System Storage® SAN Volume Controller can help youbuild a smarter storage infrastructure that scales to meet yourevolving business requirements.

IDC estimates that firms are facing a 50 - 60 percent datagrowth annually1. The rate of growth will likely accelerate asthe world becomes more instrumented, interconnected andintelligent. However, today’s organizations are looking forsmarter ways to manage the tidal wave of data while adheringto flat or shrinking budgets.

The costs of managing unabated datagrowthDespite an uncertain economic climate, unabated data growthcontinues due to the digitization of information worldwide, the need to keep more copies of data for longer periods, andthe rapid increase in distributed data sources. This datagrowth translates into a wide range of increasing managementchallenges. At the same time, IT organizations are beingrequired to adhere to higher service level agreements, includ-ing higher availability and zero data loss requirements. Manyalso face the challenges of integrating disparate systems andprocesses due to ongoing mergers and acquisitions.

In the past, companies with these types of challenges wouldhave continued to buy more storage disks and tapes as neededto manage their increasing data. This method of keeping upwith data has worked, to a degree, because disk capacity hasdoubled approximately every 18 months, keeping pace withdata accumulation. Costs for storage have come down, makingstorage equipment acquisitions relatively affordable.

However, organizations are now beginning to have difficultiesmanaging all of the storage in their environments—the costsof backup and recovery, archiving, expiration, and storageresource management are exploding. Also on the rise are thecosts to power and cool these devices, which are taking upmore and more space on the data center floor.

Managing smarter with IBM Tivoli storagemanagement solutionsIBM Tivoli storage management solutions offer smarter dataand storage management to help you better utilize your current storage environment. These solutions can help yourIT organization build and manage a smarter infrastructurethat provides the capabilities and agility to facilitate servicemanagement, asset management, data protection and reten-tion, virtualization, energy efficiency, business resiliency, andsecurity.

The service management element of the smarter businessinfrastructure is particularly relevant to the storage environ-ment in that it can help you gain visibility, control, andautomation. Increased visibility enables you to gain muchneeded perspective on your business services and processes.Your organization can benefit by being able to respond fasterand to make better, more informed decisions. Improved control enables you to better manage risk and compliance initiatives, optimize resources, and integrate processes.Automation can help you lower costs and build agility intoyour operations so that you can maximize productivity, reducelabor expenses, and improve quality.

Your storage management infrastructure can help you meettoday’s IT challenges if it gives you a holistic view of theentire environment and how it is performing, with customiz-able monitoring and reporting that fit your unique needs; if itis based on strong policies, security and processes that consis-tently provide the desired outcomes; and if it automaticallymaximizes the utilization of existing resources and adapts tochanges in the environment to maintain the availability ofapplications and data so that demanding service level requirements are satisfied.

Gaining visibility, control and automation are keys to buildinga smarter storage infrastructure.

IBM Tivoli storage management solutions can provide youwith increased availability of applications and data throughmore frequent, faster, and more reliable backups.

Holistic data reductionIBM Tivoli Storage Management solutions help you reduceyour data storage capacity requirements and costs throughoutthe data lifecycle.

● Data discovery and categorization can help you purge datathat is no longer needed by the business, including non-business data such as employees’ personal files.Understanding what data you have can also help you createpolicies for effectively managing it over time.

● Automated hierarchical storage management (HSM) andarchiving help move non-current data from expensive pri-mary storage to more cost-effective secondary storage, reducing acquisition costs as well as improving backup andrecovery processing on your production systems.

● Our unique progressive-incremental backup technologiesavoid the massive amount of data duplication caused bybackup software that forces periodic full backups.

● Data deduplication is built-in at no additional cost: at thebackup client to reduce the amount of data sent over thenetwork and shorten backup windows; and at the backupserver to further reduce capacity requirements.

● IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is also integrated withIBM System Storage ProtecTIER® Data Deduplication systems and IBM Information Archive for cost-effective,long-term data retention.

Reducing costs, improving service, andmanaging risksNot only can a smarter storage infrastructure enabled byIBM address your data management concerns, it can also helpyou reduce costs, improve service levels, and manage risks.

4 Reduce your data storage footprint and tame the information explosion

These solutions can help you reduce costs by improving themanageability of the environment and by decreasing theamount of storage you need to manage your data. We do soholistically by implementing scalable solutions, virtualization, storage management, and data reduction capabilities such asprogressive-incremental backup, hierarchical storage manage-ment, automated data expiration, and data deduplication.Controlling data and storage capacity growth can reduce bothoperational and capital investment costs.

To help you improve service, IBM Tivoli storage managementsolutions can provide you with increased availability of appli-cations and data through more frequent, faster, and more reli-able backups. These solutions can also enable faster recoveryof critical data. The result is a reduction in the amount of dataat risk, and a reduction in downtime when something goeswrong.

Figure 1: IBM takes a holistic approach to data reduction.

Furthermore, IBM offers software with built-in technologiesto help you manage risk. For example, Tivoli StorageManager features built-in encryption of data so that when youstore data on tape, it is automatically encrypted. TivoliStorage Manager FastBack can backup data many times perday without impacting operations, and eliminates the need tomove tapes from a remote office to a central vault by effi-ciently and securely replicating copies of your data over thewire to a central site for storage. As a result, you can reducethe risks of data loss and lost or stolen tapes.

By understanding what you have and how it’s performing, youcan make smarter decisions about future requirements.

Deploying a smarter storage infrastructureIn deploying a smarter storage infrastructure, IBM can helpyou understand what you have in your storage environmentand determine how it’s performing. We offer a holistic

topology view of your storage infrastructure, along with predictive analyses, planning, recommendations, and built-in,customizable operational reporting and monitoring tools.

Next, IBM can help you optimize and reduce your storagefootprint by implementing a data management lifecycle modelthat can enable you to identify, protect, securely move, archive, and delete data as appropriate. Data deduplication atmultiple storage layers minimizes the amount of data beingretained for operational and disaster recovery. Progressive-incremental backup technology avoids the duplicate data gen-erated by other approaches by creating only one initial fullbackup and then capturing only new and changed data.

Next-generation data protection technologies that eliminatethe need to shut down systems to perform regular backupsfurther improve application availability and user productivity, while also reducing the amount of data at risk by performingmore frequent backups. Additionally, IBM can help you imple-ment industry-leading and time-trusted data protection soft-ware that scales with your growth without additional cost.

Finally, IBM can help you improve utilization of your existingstorage resources to reduce capital investments. We can helpyou implement solutions such as virtualization of your totalstorage capacity across vendors, using thin provisioning at thevirtualized layer to auto-assign capacity on demand.

With a smarter storage infrastructure supported byIBM Tivoli storage management software, your organizationwill be able to stay ahead of the tidal wave of data while reduc-ing costs, improving service levels and mitigating risks. Youwill be able to manage more data with less infrastructure, eliminate manual processes and the risks associated with them, and deliver higher levels of data availability to your users andcustomers.

IBM can help you improve utilization of your existing storageresources to reduce capital investments.
