http://espn.go.com/ • Updated: May 17, 2007, 11:38 AM ET• Report: Camby unable to join team due to family matter• ESPN.com news services• USA Basketball wanted Marcus Camby to be part of its senior men's national team, but the Denver Nuggets

center turned down an invitation Wednesday because of a "serious family situation," the Denver Post reported.• Camby was extended an invitation on Monday, Jerry Colangelo, USA Basketball's senior men's team managing

director, told the Post. Lambí Wad grateful to be included in the organization's plans, according to the newspaper, but by Wednesday his agent told Colangelo his client could not accept it.

• According to the Post, Camby has been dealing with a private family situation that could last most of the offseason.

• In April, the 33-year-old Camby was named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year for the first time in his 11-year pro career. He averaged a league-best 3.3 blocks to go with 11.2 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. He also averaged 1.24 steals, tops among NBA centers.

• Camby's steady play on defense was about the only constant in another season of turmoil in Denver. The Nuggets were dogged by suspensions, trades, injuries and illnesses before finally finding a rhythm and going a franchise-best 10-1 in April to secure a fourth straight trip to the playoffs.

• Nuggets coach George Karl said he's never had a better defender in his 19 seasons as an NBA coach.• "When Marcus is on one of those nights where he's roaming around taking away everything, it's pretty

intimidating," Karl said in April. "I've not been around a player that can intimidate a game with his defensive and rebounding the way Marcus can, my whole career.

• Spurs 88, Suns 85• Short-Handed Suns Fall Short in Game 5• Article Tools Sponsored By• By LIZ ROBBINS• Published: May 17, 2007• PHOENIX, May 17 — Like a can of soda that had been dropped and then shaken over the past two days, the undermanned Phoenix Suns exploded at the opening tip of

Game 5 Wednesday night, their adrenaline surging against the visiting Spurs.• Skip to next paragraph• Matt York/Associated Press• The Spurs' Tim Duncan had 21 points and 12 rebounds on Wednesday night.• N.B.A.• Kurt Thomas appeared possessed in shutting down San Antonio’s Tim Duncan in the first half. Shawn Marion catapulted into the air, dunking and grabbing rebounds

before any of the Spurs could blink.• Steve Nash fought his way through double-team coverage, rifling the ball into his teammates’ hands and taking the big shot every time his team needed it.• How long could the Suns play with emotion to make up for the absence of their top forwards, Amare Stoudemire and Boris Diaw?• On Tuesday, the N.B.A. suspended them both for this pivotal game of the Western Conference semifinals, for having left the bench area following Robert Horry’s flagrant

foul on Steve Nash during the Suns’ victory in Game 4.• Horry was suspended for Games 5 and 6.• Fans in the U.S. Airways Center booed the Spurs every time they had the ball in protest of the N.B.A.’s strict interpretation of the rules. But as the Suns’ energy waned

and the mathematical disadvantage began to take its toll, the Spurs calmly began to catch up again, led by their own sparkplug, Manu Ginobili, who scored 15 of his game-high 26 points in that final period.

• With the score tied in the final minute, Bruce Bowen, the Spurs guard whom Stoudemire called dirty earlier this series, hit a 3-pointer with 36.4 seconds left, to lift the Spurs to an exhilarating 88-85 victory.

• San Antonio took a 3-games-to-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, and can advance to the Western Conference finals with a victory at home in Game 6 on Friday.• The Suns are not counting themselves out.• “We know we can win there — we get Amare and Boris back,” said the Suns’ Raja Bell. “We feel very confident that this place will be rocking Sunday in Game 7.• “Nobody gave us a chance to win tonight,” he added. “But we thought we were going to win. I thought we deserved to win — until the end. They made some tough plays.”• The Suns missed Stoudemire, their first-team All-N.B.A. force in the middle, and his backup, Boris Diaw, a creative facilitator on the court. Marion scored 20 first-half

points, finishing with 24 points and 17 rebounds. Nash had 12 assists and 19 points.• “We ran out of ideas, and also, we maybe got out-hustled a few times, and that really hurt us,” Nash said.• The speedy guard, Leandro Barbosa, got the start, bumping Bell to small forward, Marion to power forward and Thomas to center. Despite their small-sized lineup and a

rotation primarily of six players (James Jones came off the bench to play 17 minutes, while center Pat Burke played just 3), the offense-minded Suns managed to play extraordinary defense through three quarters.

• Marion took a turn guarding virtually every opposing player, from the Spurs’ point guard Tony Parker to Duncan (who finished with 21 points).• The Suns had taken the lead from the Spurs with 4 minutes and 55 left in the first quarter and did not relinquish it until the final minute, when Bowen connected on his 3-

pointer just in front of the Suns bench.• “They were undermanned, and we realized that,” Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich said. “They did a great job jumping on us, and we did a great job hanging in there and

showing some mental toughness and getting back in the game.”• The Spurs still trailed by 11 points with 10:24 to play in the game. Ginobili started driving to the basket, and then knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to

2 points.

Page 17: Portfolio Final

(CONTINUATION)• With 3:10 to play, Nash fouled Ginobili as he was attempting another 3-pointer.

Ginobili made all three free throws.• Then, with the score tied at 81 with 1:42 to play, Nash missed a layup, and so did

Barbosa. He turned the ball over, and Marion missed two straight shots. The Suns did not make a field goal for a 2-minute stretch, until the final second of the game.

• “We were shorthanded, and you can look at it any way you want,” Nash said. “But it was a lot to ask when you look back. We needed more out of each other, and we just didn’t have it.”

• With the suspensions to Stoudemire and Diaw, the Suns were missing an average production of 31.1 points. Horry, a reserve forward, has averaged 6.4 points in these playoffs.

• “No offense to Robert,” Popovich said, “I think they were missing a bit more.”• The Spurs may have been stunned by the Suns’ initial undermanned outburst, but the

three-time N.B.A. champions played with patience and increasing confidence.• Turns out, as much as the Suns crowd fueled its players, the jeering inspired the

Spurs, too.• “It’s hard not to get fired up with this atmosphere,” Ginobili said. “We made it through

a lot of adversity and we responded.”• http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/17/sports/basketball/17cnd-suns.html?
