HOW WE DID IT?

Page 10: New EUscreen Portal launch

Subtitling / translations

Developing work on subtitling and translations

Page 11: New EUscreen Portal launch

Identifying clips

Asked content providers to identify a short clip which could be captioned or easily translated

Asked content providers if they had .srt files created for the clips already or if they had English translations of the content.

Page 12: New EUscreen Portal launch

Testing the process

• RTV Slovenia identified a clip (this clip was silent) • Katja then provided an English translation of what was

happening in the clip • I checked the translation and made a few changes • Started to break the translation into captions • Trying to keep the sense of what was happening in the

clip but making it easy to understand through shorter sentences

• Created these captions in basic notepad (no formatting) copying the requirements for .srt files which include timecoding

Text and Video together…

Page 15: New EUscreen Portal launch

• Text not fitting image• Timings – was text on screen for long enough? • Some captions too long or too detailed• Captioning being done offline and using different media

players. Some problems with matching up timings• Also think about tone, language etc• How much to change? How much to keep the same even if

it sounds stilted

Key point: who is the translation for? - Is it about making the video understandable or is it about

providing a quality translation of EUscreen material?

Some issues…
