Early Life• Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910 in Albania, Europe.• She was baptized on August 27,1910 as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu.• Agnes had two other siblings, a brother Lazar and a sister Aga.• When she was 9 years old her father died. • At an early age, Agnes decided she wanted to help people.

Education• Mother Teresa attended a convent-run primary school and

then a state-run secondary school.

Adult Life/Career• Mother Teresa’s career was to help the poor.• She learned lots of different languages as she traveled.• She became a nun at age 18 and also changed her name from Agnes to

Teresa.• Mother Teresa traveled to a lot of places to help people especially India.• She taught at Saint Mary’s High School for 20 years.• She helped people that had the disease Leprosy.• Mother Teresa worked with brothers from a group that helped people.• She opened a home for dying.• She helped in hospitals.

Accomplishments• 1962:Padma Sri (order of the lotus) a high award given by the government of India. In the

same year she was awarded with Magsayay Prize and was described as the most worthy woman in Asia.

• 1970:She won the Good Samaritan Prize and the Kennedy Foundation Prize.• 1971:Pope John the 23rd Peace Prize at the Vatican.• 1972:Panit Nehru Award for International Understanding.• 1973:Tempelton Prize in London for Progress in Religion and the Saint Louise de Marillac

Award in Los Angeles for charitable work.• 1975:Albert Schweitzer Award for humanitarian work.• 1977:Honorary doctorate from Cambridge University in England.• 1979:Balzan Prize from the president of Italian republic. She also traveled to Oslo, Norway, to

receive the most famous international award the Nobel Peace Prize.• Presidential Medal of Honor from President Ronald Reagan.• 1987:Soviet Peace Committee Gold Medal for promoting peace and friendship among people.• 1990:International Leo Tolstoy Medal.• 1992:Peace Education Prize from UNESCO(United Nations Educational, Scientific, and

Culture Organization).Also she got the Gaudium et Spes(Joy and hope)Award for her outstanding contributions and for her spiritual humanitarian work.

• 1996:President Bill Clinton sighed legislation making Mother Teresa an honorary citizen of the United States.

• Mother Teresa got her own article in the Time Magazine.• She opened a lot of dying homes for people who were ill.

Impact on the World• Mother Teresa had a huge impact on the world because she did

as much as she could to help the people that were very sick and the people who had Leprosy.

Date and Cause of Death• Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997 because of

heart failure at the age of 87.
