Natural Light Using outside natural light to lighten up your living room is not just the most budget-wise choice for lighting; it is also the healthiest one, because human eyes prefer sunlight to that of any artificial source. You can boost the inflow of natural light by changing your draperies to sheer or pale-coloured ones. You might also want to consider enlarging the room's windows to permit freer access to the sun’s rays. Ambient Lighting Ambient lighting washes a room in warm, appealing light without producing a lot of shadows. Usually, ambient light comes from an overhead light like a pendant or chandelier, or from a torchiere floor lamp. Usually the light source is covered up by a glass globe or something comparable that softens the light and directs it throughout the room. Recessed lights can be spread out over the total ceiling to administer an even, efficient light that produces little glare. But recessed lights have a modern feel that might not suit your motif. Having multiple soft lights throughout the room can create a wonderfully pleasing ambient light. Wall sconces in combination with large, soft overhead fixtures can be an outstanding combination. For best control in producing just the right ambience for every occasion, every light source in the living room should have a dimmer or a three-way switch. Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is designed to put the spotlight on your favorite living room components, which in turn can draw awareness away from unappealing features. It can highlight features like your favorite family portrait, a piece of sculpture or your stone fireplace. When used properly, accent lighting is a pretty tool in itself, and can truly change the way guests see your house. Usually, lighting that is generally used as ambient or task lighting can double as accent lighting. Consider installing a dimmer on a chandelier or sconce that you wish to use as an accent light, or aligning the bulbs on a track lighting fixture to shine directly on a feature you would like to accentuate.

Task Lighting Task lighting is just as it sounds. It's a source of light with the purpose of making it easier to read or do other close work. If you do a lot of reading in the living room, consider a bright wall-mounted reading lamp for style and function. Floor and table lamp, if equipped with dimmers or three-way switches, are superbly multi-faceted lamps for task or ambient lighting. Lamps should preferably be set just behind the place being illuminated and a little bit to the right or left.
