Today’s data & control model…

…was designed on the constraints of yesteryear’s technology.

Page 7: Let’s Get Cirrus About Personal Clouds

Evolutionary legacy

• Business software run by business, for business.

• Your data is held by thebusiness for their use.

• You have no say over what is collected or how it is used.

When all this started, it could not have worked any other way.

Revolutionary opportunityWhat would the data & control model

for business softwarehave looked like

if it was designed at a timewhen ordinary people

had access to a mainframe in their pocket?

Let’s find out!10/21/2013 Mountain View, CA Page 8

It’s our turn!

Mainframe business software transformed commerce on a global scale.

Personal computing softwareapplied to business applications

can transform commerce on a global scaleagain.

But wait, there’s more!

Privacy, sovereignty

Personal computing software,in the hands of individuals,

that collects and processes their data locally, and honors the owner’s access policies

opens the door to applicationsthat you would not dareto farm out to a 3rd party.

Hey! Wait a minute!

Where do personal clouds fit into all of this?

The session agenda said “Personal Clouds,” dammit!

That’s personal!

The phrase “that’s personal” is universally

understood.

It means “that information is none of

your business.”

Page 15: Let’s Get Cirrus About Personal Clouds

pCloud & VRM Day, IIW XVII

“Personal” is that which you control!

10/21/2013 Mountain View, CA Page 15

What makes a cloud personal is that the owner, that’s YOU if it is your personal cloud, has the ultimate say over the data stored there, how that data is used, and who it is shared with.

A big part of the attraction is that you can decide what to share, with whom to share it and can revoke that access later.

But an oft overlooked aspect is that you are no longer dependent on the vendor for every fix, enhancement, or integration. Personal Cloud invites innovation.

So, what is a “cloud”?

A computer system with…• Elasticity: Dynamic allocation of

resources.• Redundancy: Increased availability.• Resiliency: Survives loss of some

components.• Run-time resolution: Resources, identities and addresses

are resolved dynamically.• Ubiquity: Accessible from all points within a given scope.• Abstraction. Logical connection destination.

Personal + Cloud =

10/21/2013 Mountain View, CA Page 17

If you know what personal is and you know what cloud is,just stick them together and you get Personal Cloud.

It really is that simple.

For the skeptics in the room…

Forget about business apps for a moment. Soon, even the most mundane of objects will be instrumented.

Who should own and benefit from all that personal data collected

10/21/2013 Mountain View, CA Page 18

about you? Shouldn’t YOUbe the primary stakeholder in your own data?

IoT current trajectory

10/21/2013 Mountain View, CA pCloud & VRM Day, IIW XVII Page 19

Because, at least for now, you are definitely not the primary stakeholder of your own data.

Page 20: Let’s Get Cirrus About Personal Clouds

Personal Cloud can be:

• Commercial transactions• Providing signal back to vendors• Experiential data (job history, health data)• Digital model of real-world state (social graph)• Quantified Self• Instrumented devices• Decision Support• Personal and Business Analytics

• Hosting software• Applications• Data aggregation & integration• Hosted apps & plugins• Retro-fit• Identity and authentication frameworks
