If you hold and process information about your clients, employees or suppliers, you'll need to comply with the Data Protection Act. This states that personal information must be kept secure, up to date and processed lawfully and fairly.
If you process personal information you must notify, unless you're exempt. This costs £35 a year, and failure to notify is a criminal offence. Notifying means that you join the Public Register of Data Controllers.

Backup software
Not all Software works with all media
USB Memory. Cheap, use 5-10 and cycle through them.
CDR etc. Cheap, store carefully and brake when no longer needed.
External Disks. Becoming more popular but all eggs in 1 basket.
Tape or removable disk. Best but can be expensive. Server solution.
In the cloud. Recovery can be slow.
