SDN and NFV Market Trends• SDN and NFV have emerged as prominent technologies and picked up significant market

traction in the past two years

• SDN and NFV networking technologies are poised to redefine networking architecture

• SDN and NFV market to grow from USD 2.02 Billion in 2015 to USD 45.12 Billion by 2020. This represents a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 86.1% from 2015 to 2020.

Possibilities

Network Management Systems(NMS)

Making the hardware's more configurable and customizable

Many OEM’s

Not the core functions

Difficult to change frequently

Making the NMS/EMS layer more intelligent

OEM Specific

Many Standards/Protocols

Only limited to few N/W devices

Network Controller

Open Standard

Acts as a Business layer

Can interface with other functions(Storage/Resource)

SDN Overview

Why SDN Centralized Orchestration

Handle Complexities in the new age Network Environment (Physical, Virtual, Cloud, Containers, PaaS etc)

Vendor Agnostic Configuration and Management

Greater flexibility, agility

Lower operating expenses and optimized capital expenditure

Better and more granular security

Scaling of Applications and Network Functions

OpenFlow• Allows direct access to and manipulation of the forwarding plane of network devices such as

switches and routers, both physical and virtual (hypervisor-based).• First standard communications interface defined between the control and forwarding layers

Traditional Network Vs SDNNMS

SDN ControllersOpen Source SDN Controllers• OpenDaylight• OpenContrail• ONOS• POX• Beacon ( Java Based OpenFlow Controller)• Trema (Ruby-based from NEC)• Ryu (Supported by NTT)

Commercial SDN Controllers• Cisco's Application Centric Infrastructure (ACI) • Brocade SDN Controller (ODL Distribution)• BigSwitch SDN Fabric• Blue Planet SDN Orchestration platform• B4N Controller• Cloudband (Alcatel-Lucent)• Extreme Network One Controller• Inocybe Open Networking Platform (ODL Distribution)

SDN Use Cases• Network Automation and Orchestration• Software Defined Data Center (SDDC)• Network Topology Discovery• Application Aware Network Functions• Traffic Engineering• Network Functions as a Service• Cross Domain Interconnect

NFV Overview NFV offers a new way to design, deploy and manage networking services.

NFV decouples the network functions from proprietary hardware appliances so they can run in software.

The constraints of hardware-based appliances led them to applying standard IT virtualization technologies to their networks

Originated form service providers who were looking to accelerate the deployment of new network services to support their revenue and growth objectives

To accelerate progress towards this common goal, several providers came together and created the ETSI

NFVExample Network Services or Functions are • Firewall• DNS• Large Scale NAT• Policy Manager (apart from PCRF)• DRA (Diameter Routing Agent) and DEA (Diameter Edge Agent )• Web Application Firewall (WAF)• Forward and Reverse Proxy • DPI• IDS/IPS• VPN (SSL Based or IPSEC) based Client to Site• Load Balancing• DNS Authoritative • Application Delivery Controller• DDOS/Malware (Distributed Denial of Service)• Router• VEPC• vCPE
