Image Tagging

Image tagging is embedding information about the image into the image file itself. The image can take the information with it wherever it goes. This information is called metadata.

Image Tagging

By tagging an image you can embed a much broader and richer range of information into the image file, which could include anything from technical details, to copyright information, keywords, dates, full description and photographer details.

Traditionally this kind of information is stored with the image in a database, enabling you to search, retrieve and use images based on its metadata.

Practice: Tag some of the photos you have in your computer then search for images using the tags you just used.

Some photo editing programs are not “aware” of tags and just do not support them.

If an image is tagged, then it is important to find out what applications support the metadata format you use.

Types of Tagging Formats

The most common formats at present are:

1. What is the main objective behind the creation of the photo collection?

2. How is this collection will be hosted and managed?

3. What metadata do users need or expect?

Identifying Metadata Needs

The following questions should be answered to determine what metadata you need to manage and use your photos:

4. What metadata do you need to manage the collection?

5. What are others with similar collections doing?

6. Are there any institutional, technological or legal demands I need to consider?
