HOW TO WININ THE IOT WORLD

Collective Thinking and Observationsat CES 2015

IOT IS HEREAt this year’s CES, the Internet of Things dominated both the keynote speeches and conference sessions.

It was also very obvious on the exhibition floors. Here is my take on what it takes to succeed in the new world of IoT,

from the discussions at the conference sessions and the exhibits on display.

MARKET: GROWING FAST & OVER THE TOP OF HYPE CYCLE

By 2020, it is estimated that 30 (IDC) to 50 (Cisco) billion IoT devices will be in place and the market size will be US$ 3 tr (IDC) to over 10 tr (Cisco).• 5~6 devices per household now, 30~40 devices by 2020• IoT devices include:

- Smart phones, tablets- Wearable devices: “Quantified Self ”- Connected home appliances: Smart Home- Connected cars: Smart Car- Biometric and health care devices, sports and fitness

devices, environment sensors and devices, etc.

DEVICES: ALWAYS ON & ALWAYS CONNECTED

IoT devices typically comprise of sensors, processors, storage, communication and power units. They, especially sensor products, may or may not have a display.• They need to be always on so that low power consumption is

important• Also always connected and inter-operable across multiple

platforms and standards.• Embed the ability to adapt and to stay current with software

updates• IPv6-ready, and cost efficient

DATA: FROM TRACKINGTO UTILIZING

Our body and the world around us have been generating tons of data, but only now we are able to capture the data in real-time and meaningful ways.

• Collected and presented, in a contextually appropriate manner, for effective user engagement

• Combined and analyzed to create personalized information for user

• Data security and privacy protection

USER INTERFACE/UX: CONTEXTUALLY APPROPRIATE &

FRICTIONLESSIoT devices may interact with users through sensors, smart phones, tablets, or dedicated panels.

• Contextually appropriate mode: touch, voice, gesture, cognitive, or ambient

• Frictionless and seamless UI: “simple” and “visualized” for users to understand the data and feel in control

• Main control center of interaction: individual device/hub, dedicated panel, tablet, or smart phone?

S/W APPLICATION: CONNECTIVITY, ALGORITHMS & ENGAGEMENT

Software is the key to deliver real value and to differentiate.

• Connect different devices, and combine different types and sources of data

• Analyze them and develop algorithms with industry and research experts to solve a real problem and create value

• Engage and interact with users with empathy and in a contextually appropriate manner

BUSINESS MODEL: S/W MARRIED WITH H/W

A successful IoT business model need combine S/W and H/W to create new value for a significant, recurring, and sustainable business.• Useful, more efficient solution through “Autonmous" or

“Behavioral” changes with “Simple", "Less complex" UX• Recognize "Personal data as new digital currency” and provide

appropriate level of security and privacy protection• Collaboration and partnership for product development,

technology, manufacturing, marketing and sales

PLATFORM/ECOSYSTEM: OPEN &COLLABORATION

Every player needs to be Open and to Collaborate.

• Higher layer of standards for inter-operability and data sharing among devices

• Data security and privacy by design on industry-wide level

• Cooperation with government bodies to develop regulatory environment for a right balance between privacy and value creation

THE KEY TO SUCCESSwill be a Seamless UX through Superior Data Analytics and

Software Engineering.
