Centre of Expertise Programme

• The purpose of the Finnish Government’s Centre of Expertise Programme is to utilise top level knowledge and expertise as a resource for business operations, job creation and regional development

• The programme is founded on the utilization of regional expertise which is of an internationally high standard.

• The national programme is implemented by 13 nationally significant expertise clusters and 21 centres of expertise in different regions.

• The Tampere Region Centre of Expertise Programme coordinated by Technology Centre Hermia Ltd is one of 21 centres of expertise in Finland.

• The Tampere Region Centre of Expertise Programme is a participant in seven expertise clusters. Technology Centre Hermia Ltd has been implementing the national Centre of Expertise Programme in the central Tampere Region since 1995.

• The Centre of Expertise Programme’s national website www.oske.net

Hermia participates in five clusters

The Tampere Region Centre of Expertise has been expanded to cover seven fields of expertise for the years 2007-2013.The centres of expertise receive half of their basic funding from the state and half from cities and municipalities. The main part of their volume is constituted by the projects they launch.

The expertise clusters in the central Tampere Region during the centre of expertise period are:

•Intelligent Machines (National coordination) •Ubiquitous Computing (National coordination) •Digital Contents •Energy Technology •Nanotechnology

and those implemented by Finn-Medi Research Ltd are•Health Technology•Biotechnology

Digibusiness

• Main themes– social media– ubimedia – games

• The chosen areas are existing and future growth engines in digital media business that have significant new business prospects

• The centre of expertise utilizes the region’s wide-ranging expertise foundation and generates projects, events and new network structures that support the emergence of new growth business and strengthen the expertise and growth of companies in the region.

The Digibusiness Cluster focuses on the development of content business expertise by providing companies with services related to business expertise, product and service development and internationalization. Three entities that are important to the industry have been selected as joint themes: the promotion of internationalization, the accumulation of business expertise and acceleration of research and development activities in the SME sector, and the gathering of data related to the industry.

Page 11: Hermia&Oske&Eltrio&Teknokas Presentation

Energy technology

• Main themes:

– Boiler and gasification technologies and their applications in power and heat plants and in energy-intensive industry.

– Multi-fuel plants, the effects of the co-use of several different fuels on incineration processes, emissions, material and structural solutions and process control.

– Industrial energy solutions, the efficient and economical utilization of industrial by-product flows, heat load and waste heat.

The Energy Technology Cluster focuses on industry that produces machines, equipment and services needed for energy production, distribution and use. Pressures for change in the energy industry generate opportunities for the Finnish energy technology industry, particularly in the market for clean energy and climate change control. The aim is to achieve significant growth in the development and competitive capacity of Finnish companies in the cluster.

elTRIO

elTRIO is co-operation network of technology industries for educational institutes and authorities for taking care of not wasting time and money by doing same eLearning materials in several institutes. The main idea in elTRIO is that the network tries to find ways to share eLearning materials instead of creating own versions of materials and learning objects which already exist.

Page 42: Hermia&Oske&Eltrio&Teknokas Presentation

The elTRIO partnership in the consortium may consist of

• Global suppliers in the technology industry, such as Fastems (flexible manufacturing systems, www.fastems.com) and Metso (process industry machinery and systems, www.metso.com)

• Supply networks of SMEs in electronics and electro-technical industry, automation, mechanical engineering, and metals industry

• Technology centres that coordinate the elTRIO network and promote the emergence of new, technology-oriented business and developing competitiveness in key clusters, including mechanical engineering and automation

• Research units with expertise and support in implementation and localization of products and services developed in the project

• Educational institutions (from vocational education to universities) that are responsible for education and training in the field of technology industry

• eLearning and software companies to localize and market project results

elTRIO is looking for European cooperation

• elTRIO (www.eltrio.fi) is a national e-learning network for technology industries, metals industry, mechanical engineering, electronics and automation. It is a major national actor that is looking for European cooperation to support the international activities of the technology industries.

• We are looking for possibilities for cooperation with similar European networks in the technology industry and an opportunity to benefit from the results of European research and development projects. We are especially interested in projects that design and develop innovative methods, tools and services for simulations and virtual manufacturing, knowledge management, distributed collaboration at work and learning at work, in both mobile and fixed environments.

Teknokas Education Center in Ylivieska

• TEKNOKAS, the first nationwide technology education center in Finland, is developing general technology education in primary and secondary schools.

• The center develops the contents and methods of technology education as well as teaching materials and equipment for technology education.

• One of the main activities of the center is to arrange primary and secondary school teachers updating training in technology education, to support them to take into account the cross-curricula theme of technology education in their teaching and school culture.

Page 48: Hermia&Oske&Eltrio&Teknokas Presentation

National level Technology Education Cooperation

• TEKNOKAS supports educating children, via teachers, to understand, value and develop further the environment that man has built for his purposes, i.e. technology.

• The content areas include automation and robotics, mechanics, structures, electricity and electronic as well as the basic issues related to the production, storage and utilisation of energy.

• As technology often develops through innovations, important goals of technology education also include the development of skills to observe and solve problems related to the built environment and encouragement of creativity
