Consumers the world over are using new, increasing-ly-complex, data-oriented devices and applications. Those trends have produced a dramatic and continu-ing surge in network traffic -- growth that holds great promise for network operators of all kinds. But at the same time, higher volumes and complexity are also forcing service providers to better monitor, under-stand and manage the traffic that flows across their networks.

The P Series from GENBAND provides robust, cost-effective Traffic and Policy Management for today’s growing networks. The GENBAND P5TM is an entry to mid-range TPM solution that offers robust function-ality for network deployments from 200 Mbps to 5 Gbps.

GET A HANDLE ON NETWORK TRAFFICThe P5 is an entry to mid-range member of the GENBAND P Series Traffic and Policy Management product family. A conveniently-pack-aged 1RU rack-mounted appliance ssupporting three fixed channels of Gigabit Ethernet (GE), with an option for up to two additional GE channels, the GENBAND P5 is ideally suited for access/edge deployments in broadband networks or as an enterprise or campus Wide Area Network (WAN) connection. To enable quick and simple field replacement, the P5 features front-mounted network interface and hard drive (HDD) modules. P5 interfaces support a mix of copper (RJ-45) and fiber (SX/LX) channels. P5 hard drives provide mirrored RAID 1 failure protection.

All P Series platforms utilize the same firmware, and the P5 delivers the full range of P Series features. The P5 can also co-exist in networks with the GENBAND P1 TPM solution, as well as the high-end P10, P20, P50 and P80. The GENBAND P5 runs all P Series TPM modules, including LiveView, Filtering and Traffic Shaping. The P Series Statistics module typically runs on dedicated hardware, but can run in-ternally on the P5 for deployments with less than 25,000 local hosts. The P5 also provides asymmetric traffic support.

The P Series unique classification and identification engine provides real-time views and other functionality. Flows can be characterized as streaming, random-looking, interactive, or by other application-specific attributes. The engine can also aggregate filename, SIP caller ID, chat channel, mime-type and other detailed properties.

DEPLOYMENT FLEXIBILITYThe GENBAND P5 is well suited for deployment at the network access/edge or WAN connection. The P5 features a transparent, intelligent and non-disruptive TPM architecture, and can be installed for passive monitor-only use, or as an in-line device for filtering and bandwidth management.

Statistics are typically pushed to a stand-alone P Series appliance. For smaller deployments with a maximum of 25,000 local hosts, statistics can be run directly on the P5 solution. P Series devices are deployed as transparent elements in a redundant location, and typically rely on the network for redundancy. P Series devices can be combined with any Layer 2 or Layer 3 redundancy or load sharing approach. Multiple P5 devices can be clustered to provide increased capacity. A cluster of load-sharing P5 devices provide automatic resilience. Rapid Spanning Tree (RSTP) or other Layer 2 fail-over technologies can also be used to ensure high-availability performance with straight-through or full functional redundancy.

EXAMPLES OF P5 DEPLOYMENTS

RICH FEATURES AND FUNCTIONALITYThe GENBAND P5 is an integrated one (1) rack unit (RU) 19” rack-mounted appliance with redundant AC or DC power supplies. As a transparent Layer 2 device, the P5 utilizes a channel approach with bonded internal and external interfaces. These interfaces can be any kind of Gigabit Ethernet (GE) – RJ-45 copper or single-mode (LX)/

multimode (SX) fiber. Interfaces are deployed as physical chan-nel modules. This Layer 2 design assigns no IP addresses to these interfaces, which substantially increases security by disabling targeted attacks. This approach also reduces latency and network impact, while boosting capacity and simplifying deployment.

The P5 incorporates three (3) systems management interfaces – Admin, AUX and Console. The systems management interfaces are RJ-45 BASE-10/100/1000. The Admin interface remotely connects the Admin client and other network management systems. The AUX interface can be dedicated to statistical activities or to QueueSync connectivity in asymmetric network deployments. The console port sup-ports systems can be set up through the CLI (command line interface) or SSH.

The GENBAND P5 can manage up to 5 Gbps throughput, four million concurrent flows and 100,000 new connections per second (CPS), and can manage higher capacities under certain conditions.

PART OF THE P SERIES FAMILYWith the introduction of the P Series family of products, GENBAND is committed to delivering carrier-grade Traffic and Policy Management solutions. That dedication applies across the board -- from capacity and functionality to support and professional services. The P5 is backed by GENBAND professional services, including intel-ligent services, network planning, tools and resources needed to evolve networks to the next level. The P Series Traffic and Policy Management product family also fully complements the full GENBAND fixed and mobile telecommunication solutions.
