People expect more from healthcare providers than of any other type of public institution. As understandable as this is, it places hospitals under tremendous pressure. How can you meet your targets in a real world of budget constraints and staff shortages?

Today’s healthcare industry is on the brink of a major shift: the opportunity to move from caring for sick patients on a case-by-case basis to providing holistic, proactive, and personalized long-term accountable health management. Such a dramatic change requires overcoming a number of challenges: the need to alter workflow processes, adapt to new workplace cultures, define processes for handling reimbursements, and manage organizational change. In addition—and perhaps the most technically daunting challenge of the evolving healthcare model—is that it requires an end-to-end digital health framework that enables clients to coordinate care across the extended healthcare ecosystem.

To help the industry realize the goal of delivering collaborative care, HP has developed innovative solutions that give healthcare providers around the world

the opportunity to achieve process efficiencies, tangible cost savings, and improved patient outcomes.

Of course, it is your clinical teams—the doctors and nurses—who really determine the quality of patient outcomes. But like other professionals, their success depends partly upon having the right information when they need it. And that is where HP can help.

HP offers a wide range of imaging and printing solutions specifically designed for healthcare providers. These can help you get the most of your printing and copying infrastructure, manage your environment, and digitize and streamline your document-intensive processes, helping you to improve your workflows in areas such as admissions, at the nursing station, and in the medical records department.

HP offers a wide range of imaging and printing solutions and services for healthcare providers. Broadly speaking, they fall into three tiers

Optimize infrastructure

Manage environment

Improve workflow

WHAT

By consolidating many functions, such as faxing, printing, scanning and copying into cost-efficient multifunction printers (MFPs), and making sure you have the right mix of devices placed on the network where they are most needed, you can reduce human error, cut costs, increase user productivity, and increase your return on investment (ROI).

Working with HP, often as part of an HP Managed Print Services contract, the day-to-day running of your print infrastructure can be continually fine-tuned to help reduce cost and maintain high levels of productivity. HP security and “pull” printing solutions can help you reduce risk and aid with compliance mandates.

Through the deployment of HP workflow solutions and intelligent HP devices, our consultants can help you automate paper-intensive workflows. This doesn’t just help reduce costs, it also reduces administrative burdens and, most importantly, improves patient outcomes.

HP works with each client to produce a tailored package that matches the client’s goals and needs. This could mean choosing solutions entirely from one of the above tiers, or mixing and matching across all three tiers. It is all about getting it right for you.

CHECK UP:HP CAN OFFER YOU

With the right mix of devices, you can balance cost and productivity

In many healthcare organizations, the printing environment consists of an assortment of devices of different ages and from different vendors: some old and overworked, others state-of-the-art but, if they are not optimally placed on the network, underutilized.

When you work with HP, our consultants use HP tools to gather details of the printers on your network and produce detailed reports on users print behavior and the way in which your print, fax, copy, and scan infrastructure is used. With this information, they can design an environment that ensures you have the right mix of devices to meet the needs of your users and that these devices are

placed exactly where they are needed and will be most useful.

By making sure you have the right mix of devices and consolidating print, fax, copy, and scan functions into cost-efficient multifunction devices, you can not only improve clinical and back office productivity, but also help significantly reduce costs, too.

HP has one of the broadest device portfolios on the market: from single-function HP LaserJet printers that fit on a desktop to departmental multifunction devices. No matter what your requirements, you can be confident that HP has the mix of devices to match.

With HP remote print management tools, you can easily support and maintain your printer, scanner, and copier fleet at optimum efficiency for your “always on” infrastructure.

HP Web Jetadmin

HP Universal Print Driver

HP Security Solutions

HP Web Jetadmin is a market-leading remote print management program. It can integrate closely with Microsoft Active Directory and allows IT support staff to remotely maintain and troubleshoot your entire fleet, simplifying and reducing the cost of day-to-day management. And it is free to download; just go to: www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin

After optimization, the next step is to ensure that your infrastructure stays in peak condition. There are a number of ways HP can help you achieve this goal.

Increasingly, many healthcare organizations are choosing to outsource some or all of their day-to-day imaging and printing management under an HP Managed Print Services contract. This is a flexible contract that can be tailored to your organization’s needs. By outsourcing some or all of your print and copy provision to HP, you free your own support staff to concentrate on other tasks such as EMR and/or CPOE implementation, and you can reduce ongoing imaging and printing costs.

Alternatively, your IT support department may choose to implement market-leading HP remote print management tools. These provide the tools you need to support and maintain your imaging and printing fleet centrally at optimum efficiency.

The HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) is a single driver that supports all HP business printers and multifunction devices. It offers a range of features comparable to those of the device’s own driver, while reducing the cost of driver certification and simplifying the printing experience of mobile users. Download the free HP UPD at: www.hp.com/go/upd

Compliance and patient data confidentiality are key concerns for healthcare organizations. Using HP “pull” printing solutions, documents are printed when an authorized user identifies themselves at the printer, using a PIN, swipe card or other means. So documents aren’t left lying at the printer for anyone to read.

Other security options include the encryption of data as it travels across the network and the use of secure, encrypted hard disks in your HP multifunction printers.

Sensitive documents, such as prescriptions, can be protected with printed security features that guard against unauthorized copying and alteration. These solutions include:

• Copy-evident pantograph: If a prescription is copied, a special printed pattern reveals the word “COPY” repeated across the entire copy

• Variable data watermark: Unique user-defined data is printed across the back or front of each document to protect against fraudulent alteration

• MicroPrint optimized for laser printing: Reveals secondary authentication and copy protection under simple magnification

• Intelligent warning box: Allows first line inspectors to easily verify document authenticity

With HP workflow solutions, you can automate many paper-intensive workflows

The smooth running of any healthcare organization relies on the seamless flow of critical information, automatically routed to where it needs to be at any given point. With documents arriving at healthcare providers from many different sources, sometimes in digital form, sometimes on paper, information management can be a labor- and paper-intensive job.

With HP workflow solutions, you can automate these paper-intensive workflows. This can mean lower costs, a reduced administrative burden, and less scope for human error. And because of close collaboration with leading healthcare application providers, you can be certain HP workflow solutions integrate seamlessly with clinical healthcare systems.

A good example of how this can work is in the Admissions and Medical Records departments. Using HP multifunction printers (MFPs), you can scan documents, such as prescriptions and test results, straight to a patient’s medical record at the touch of a button.

You can even print patient details and barcodes directly onto patient wristbands, further facilitating the correct and timely flow of information.

But it is not always about hardware and software. HP consulting and integration services teams can analyze how you run your unit and recommend technology to improve efficiency and reduce manual steps in the process.

THE

Collaborative healthcare is a team effort, involving many professionals performing in highly specialized roles. As care coordination extends beyond the hospital and physician office setting to the home and mobile environment, the efficient management of information and care is vital to achieving optimal outcomes. HP Digital Health solutions focus on enabling real-time information sharing—and provide a vision and blueprint for how health organizations can improve operational efficiencies, speed innovations into practice, minimize risk, and deliver high quality care.

One of the more remarkable digital health success stories involves Akershus University Hospital (AHUS) in Norway, which opened in October 2008. The state-of-the-art hospital has a high performance digital network, security infrastructure, teleconference, and video conference systems, as well as desktop and printing facilities supplied by Telenor, HP, and a consortium of partner vendors.

Their digital hospital transformation has enabled real-time connectivity and greater efficiency. Small robots deliver supplies, every physician and nurse carries a wireless IP phone and smart card to check in at one of the hospital’s 1,800 wireless access points, and a digital surveillance system makes it possible for fewer employees to provide better security.

Since AHUS opened, the hospital realized staggering improvements in efficiency and productivity:

• The average length of patient stay was reduced by 20 percent.

• There was a 50 percent reduction in adverse events.

• The facility was able to decrease the number of full-time positions from 4,800 to 4,600.(2) HP Transforming Your Enterprise magazine, Winter 2010.

The HP Digital Health solution portfolio includes:

• HP Digital Hospital (DH) 2.0: HP Digital Hospital holistically addresses the IT needs of the most complex and critical elements of care delivery in inpatient settings. Featuring an expanded solution framework and formal reference architectures, HP Digital Hospital uses technology convergence to create a highly integrated, pervasive, real-time information environment. HP Information Workflow Solutions provide the secure on- and off-ramp to this state-of-the- art environment.

• HP V-Health (Virtual Health) Management: This framework and solution set focuses on the outpatient and home environment, delivering tools that enable healthcare organizations to link care “teams” to monitor health and deliver care to patients wherever it is needed.

HP Digital Health 2.0 and V-Health solutions leverage hardware, software, and services from across the entire HP portfolio. Healthcare organizations that rely on the HP solution suite are then able to efficiently connect different facilities such as hospitals, ambulatory clinics, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and physician offices to deliver integrated care. HP Patient Communications Solutions and HP ePrint Enterprise are critical components of the virtual health strategy.

When healthcare organizations realize the capabilities of the HP Digital Health solution framework, they’re better positioned to achieve basic operational efficiencies such as digitized patient records and images; to orchestrate collaborative care by sharing information among hospitals, clinics, laboratories, home health nurses, administrators, and consumers; and to gain access to meaningful analytics that lead to better decision-making and drive better outcomes.

HP works closely with clinical software experts to make sure that its printers, scanners, and MFPs meet the requirements set by the healthcare application vendors

Managing complexity in large healthcare organizations is already a demanding task: it doesn’t need to be any more challenging. That is why HP works closely with clinical software experts to ensure that its comprehensive range of printers, scanners and multifunction products meet the requirements set by the healthcare independent software vendors (ISVs).

In particular, HP works closely with the Cerner Corporation to make sure that its printers and MFPs integrate seamlessly with Cerner solutions. A testimony to this close partnership is the fact that the server component of Cerner Millennium® runs on an HP implementation of UNIX® running on HP Integrity servers. HP has a wide range of printers and MFPs that are fully compatible with Cerner solutions. As well as working closely with Cerner, HP also has close working relationships with other key providers of healthcare software, such as EPIC, EMIS, INPS, and iSOFT .

It is relationships such as these that have helped HP and its partners develop secure, easy-to-deploy solutions for electronic health records. This has made it easy to capture documents such as identification cards, patient data and procedural consent forms, allowing them to be easily and quickly accessed by key departments and electronic patient record systems.

Furthermore, because of close collaborations with leading healthcare software providers, HP machines are also built with future Health Information System (HIS) and clinical software applications in mind, thus minimizing the need for you to upgrade your hardware. This, of course, represents another significant savings for you.

Leverage your investment in HP technology, improve quality, and consolidate device footprint with the range of HP devices approved for LaserBand patient ID wristbands and labels

Patient safety is one of the major issues facing any healthcare organization. Handwritten, addressographed or label-applied wristbands have proven to be ineffective in this regard. Patients every year have been given the wrong medical care because of confusion over wristbands—often due to illegible or damaged handwriting.

Over the last few years, printed wristbands with patient data have been made mandatory to phase out handwritten wristbands in many countries.

HP is an approved laser and multifunction printer manufacturer that has a range of devices for LaserBand® laser-printed patient identification wristbands. These wristbands are highly effective in combating the problem of inaccurate data. As they are self-laminating, the information on the band is protected against fluids, scratching or other physical damage.

And by helping to ensure legible patient data, hospitals can always provide the right care to the patient and avoid adverse events. This will also help speed up your admission processes as the wristband can be seamlessly generated straight out of the Hospital Information System and collated directly into the admission package for that patient with a one-step process.

Because LaserBand wristbands print on standard HP LaserJet devices, you can use many of the existing HP LaserJet printers or MFPs you have to print wristbands as well as all of your other printed documents.

Reading a barcode wristband using a portable barcode scanner, clinical staff can instantly access a wealth of patient information, including photographs, standard medical records, allergy warnings and so on. This can greatly reduces the scope for error, helping to improve patient safety and clinical outcomes.

Governments around the world are recognizing the importance of electronic health records as a means to reduce healthcare costs and improve patient care

The HP Distributed Workflow Solutions for Healthcare are Enterprise Content Management (ECM) solutions that streamlines and automates paper-based document processes. HP MFPs capture and transform paper documents into digital images that are routed to a secure and centrally managed repository.

Software intelligently automates and optimizes the flow of the documents between people, applications, and devices. It works with virtually any clinical electronic medical record (EMR) or business workflow application, as well as familiar software such as PeopleSoft, Lawson, Microsoft Office and SharePoint platforms. HP and HP partners like Hyland Software make it easy to improve business processes:

• Intuitively index and route documents directly from MFP touchscreens

• Integrate with any line of business application without custom coding

• Easily create sophisticated workflows from preconfigured rules and actions

• Achieve results quickly, one department at a time, without losing site of enterprise objectives

The Medical Record Release of Information module helps ensure that an organization’s record set is complete and controlled. It aids in securing patient information, providing a central document repository for all electronic medical records, including data from other patient information systems. Disclosures are captured in one secure system, identifying any information released, by whom, to whom, and on whose authority.

The HP solutions also benefit the Health Information Management (HIM) department by eliminating the need for an analyst to manually collect documents such as radiology reports, lab reports, and operative reports from a variety of different systems. With the HP Distributed Workflow Solutions for Healthcare, these documents are automatically collected in a single location. Authorized personnel can easily review them, and updates can be sent to the chart completion module within the HIS to track and report on medical record completion status.

With HP Distributed Workflow Solutions for Healthcare, you can cut operating costs, save time, and significantly cut clinical turnaround times.

SECURE PRESCRIPTIONS WITH

FOR HEALTHCARE

Help secure your prescriptions with an easy-to-deploy solution

Prescription fraud is costly on many fronts. Unfortunately, the solutions designed to prevent this fraud can be costly too. Many providers use pre-printed security pads or dedicated printers and pre-printed security paper. But these can be expensive and create cumbersome workflows. A less expensive, more practical solution is needed to secure prescriptions.

What if you could…

• Realize a quick return on investment with an easy-to-deploy plain-paper solution?

• Eliminate the expense and hassle of purchasing, tracking and taking inventory of pre-printed paper?

• Simplify workflows by printing prescriptions, referrals, and condition information on the same printer?

• Reduce the number of calls between pharmacy and care provider caused by illegible handwriting?

HP SecureRx Printing SolutionThe HP SecureRx Printing Solution offers a practical, cost-conscious alternative to pre-printed solutions. Powered by the reliable HP LaserJet P3005 and HP LaserJet P4015 families of printers, it’s easy to deploy, intuitive to use and can offer a rapid return on your investment.

Of course, government compliance for tamper-resistant prescriptions is critical.

HP SecureRx Printing Solution has features that map to compliance requirements:

• Printed copy-void pantograph: A special pattern is printed in the background of the prescription. When photocopied, this pattern is clearly visible and reveals the word “COPY” repeated many times.

• Customizable micro-print font: A custom message printed on the prescription border in a 0.6 font. When copied, this becomes unreadable; something that can be authenticated with a simple 5x loupe.

• Variable print: Visible with the naked eye, this displays user-selected information (such as patient name, drug, and dosage) in repeating diagonal patterns across the prescription.

• Security features description: The anti-counterfeiting feature serves as a warning box printed on the prescription that describes the security features that should be present on a valid original.

• EMR System-generated features: Any special characters designed to help prevent erasure or modification are printed on the front of the prescription as well as in the variable print feature.

Help reduce hospital re-admissions, improve patient outcomes and promote transition care

IMPROVEHP PATIENT

OUTCOMES WITH

COMMUNICATIONS

One solution for all communications

In addition to helping you produce more effective discharge documents, the HP Patient Communications Solutions offer one platform for all communications. Designed to fit most IT environments, including service-oriented architectures (SOA), it can access your existing systems and data. That includes content from health information systems (HIS), electronic health records (EHR), patient data and patient education content.

Personalized Care Plans can be completed during patient interactions and produced immediately. Documents can be delivered in the patient’s preferred language to virtually any media, including print and mail, fax, web, email, and even SMS and voice messages. And you can streamline high-volume processes and redesign statements and newsletters so that they’re more patient-friendly and easier to understand.

In order to increase clinical effectiveness, reduce re-hospitalization rates and reduce the number of readmissions within 30 days, hospitals are reviewing the effectiveness of their discharge documents. Too often, patients receive generic communication. And current systems are unequal to the task of effectively communicating with patients, primary care trusts, doctors, and the extended care community.

HP Patient Communications Solutions address these challenges by providing comprehensive patient communication management. From a simple interface, staff can quickly produce discharge documents that automatically compile all of the information necessary for a positive transition to life after discharge.

These documents can be automatically populated with:

• Illustrated medication lists: These can include instructions on what medication to take, when and in what dosage. And including images of the medicines is a simple, effective aid to proper use.

• What to expect: Help patients understand how their healing process will work, complications to look out for, the intensity and duration of pain to expect, possible side-effects to medication, and so on.

• Contact details: Discharged patients are often disoriented and may not remember who treated them. Helping them contact the right people avoids confusion and ensures they’ll receive the best response.

• Detailed follow-up instructions: Help patients to understand when they should follow up and what they should expect or provide at each appointment.
