CMS Extensions - Ektron provides a complete developer SDK allowing developers to create extensions where custom code executes upon certain events firing within the CMS. For example, your organization might want your content management team to receive notifications via AIM messenger whenever new content is published. A developer would tap into the “OnAfterPublish”event to send those notifications.

Another example would be to use the CMS extension architecture to manipulate the content object being entered by the author. For example, a content author wants to display a Google Map within his article to show the location of an event. When the author fills in the address metadata an event would be fired, “OnBeforePublish,” which would execute custom code making a web service call into the Google APIs and passing in the address to return back a Latitude and Longitude for storage within the article content object. The end result would be a Google Map showing the exact location of the event, with the author never having to leave the CMS interface to create that map.

Provider Model – Ektron’s provider model creates an abstraction layer to access data, making Ektron fully extensible. Areas of the Ektron platform that use providers include analytics, allowing developers to integrate with their own analytics system if they implement a provider; search, which has provider-based integration points where developers can customize many fundamental aspects of search; and Ektron eCommerce, which integrates with major purchase and shipping providers.

Charged with raising market awareness of the bank’s asset-based lending products, driving new business leads through Lloyds TSB Commercial Finance’s online presence and capturing customer data, Ektron Elite Partner, Freestyle Interactive undertook a comprehensive redesign of http://www.ltsbcf.co.uk. The work began with extensive qualitative and quantitative focus group and usability research carried out during much of 2009 as part of the scope and definition phase.

“As our main way of recruiting new customers, the website is critical to the success of the Commercial Finance business,” notes Keith Bennett, Lloyds TSB Commercial Finance Ecommerce and Online Channel Manager.

Built on the innovative Ektron web content management platform,

one of the new site’s major features is a “Quick Quote” calculator using a sliding bar to calculate the size of loan dollars available to the business, based on turnover and size of invoices, providing users an instant loan value. Other new features include:

A “Get in Touch” button integrated with the Ltsbcf call centre for instant call back to interested customers.

A “Get an Instant Quote” (RFQ) allows businesses to submit a full quote application which is forwarded to the Ltsbcf business development team through the Salesforce CRM system.

The multivariate testing feature of the Ektron content management system is being utilized by the Ltsbcf marketing teams to manage campaign content and to run multivariate tests on page content, particularly focused on use of the online quote calculator. Multivariate testing is the process of experimenting with different combinations of factors on a web page to drive a user to take action. The Ryerson School of Journalism academic program includes four media areas: print, magazine, broadcast and online. Faced with the challenge of maintaining an online presence for

each, as well as needing to support other sites, the School decided to implement a content management system that would simplify the process of authoring, editing, and managing web content for students, faculty and technical staff.

“Prior to our implementing the Ektron content management system, all student produced websites were using various open-source applications and with content being produced through Dreamweaver,” says Lesley Salvadori, technical coordinator at Ryerson School of Journalism. “Students needed to have at least an intermediate knowledge of HTML to use the sites and instructors and technical staff were expected to troubleshoot and support both the platforms and users. In many cases the technical staff was also responsible for the file transfer – FTP’ing – of student content as well as supporting the file management for each of these websites. Different instructors were responsible for courses and their associated websites each semester, which meant there

was little continuity in terms of file archiving and management.”

With more than four hundred users accessing the system, Ryerson School of Journalism needed a solution that would interact with the University’s preexisting Active Directory system. Any solution had to be easily customizable by the developer and compliant with web standards including XML and .NET.

After research by Lindsay Smith, the School’s CMS administrator, on various content management systems, with a focus on a CMS that could house several different URLs and would allow content authors to easily incorporate still images, audio and video,

Ryerson School of Journalism selected the Ektron platform. The School initially installed v7.6 of the Ektron solution in late 2009, and later upgraded to v8.0 of the platform. The deployment was done by the in-house staff.

“From my perspective, file management has become incredibly easy now thanks to the Ektron system,” says Lindsay Smith. “Prior to implementing Ektron our files were housed on a number of different servers, creating a file management nightmare for us. Files were buried deep within multiple folders and often could not be located at all. Ektron’s content management system has centralized the file management process, housing everything on a single server which is easily managed by a single administrator, saving time and the need for additional technical support and making the archival process simple and straightforward.”

“Managing student user accounts has become much easier,” web designer/programmer Chris Kim adds. “We don’t have to teach the students HTML, allowing them to focus more on the journalism rather than the technical aspects of getting their content on the Web. Ektron Smart Forms have really helped with that. The students only have to complete certain fields and all of

a sudden they’ve created this really beautiful functioning web page.”

Ektron Smart Forms simplify page creation by separating content creation from its ultimate presentation on the Web. After a site administrator has set up a Smart Form template it can be used by content authors for entering their material. As well as making web page creation simple and easy even for the technically unsophisticated, Smart Forms help site managers maintain consistency and branding.

“The Ektron content management system has allowed the School to be free from dealing with third-party services such as YouTube and commercial web hosts,” concludes Lesley Salvadori. “All student projects are maintained on our in-house server. The time needed to troubleshoot problems has significantly decreased. Students now focus more on producing content rather than troubleshooting technical aspects of Web development.”

You want a site that you can feel confident will be able to grow to meet future needs and help you increase operational efficiency. Even though your “website” is actually a complex, multi-site configuration embracing five external sites plus an intranet, you want the migration from old to new to be accomplished quickly, preferably within just a few months. And you want an active working partnership among yourself, the web

designers and the technical team where all sides feel comfortable with each other.

That’s the challenge University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina (www.uhseast.com) presented to vendors when it committed to re-engineering its web strategy in late 2008. A regional health system serving over 1.3 million people in 29 counties in eastern North Carolina, University Health Systems (UHS) is made up of eight hospitals, physician practices, home health, hospice, wellness centers and other health care services.

Charged with oversight, information architecture and

acting as the lead on executing web strategy was Kellie Vicars, communications supervisor at UHS. Working with Vicars was Andy Anderson, UHS administrator of IT operations information services.

UHS chose Ektron and its Elite Partner, The C2 Group, not only because the health system felt comfortable with the combination of technical

and design expertise the two companies brought to the table, but also because they felt secure that the Ektron platform would meet their needs. According to Andy Anderson, a key factor in that decision was the advanced content management capabilities the Ektron platform offered. Ektron’s multi-site support and synchronization technology, eSync, allows hospitals such as UHS to create individual multiple-site environments managed through one centralized administrative interface.

“Some of the services that Ektron’s Professional Services Group could supply also helped us make the decision,” adds Vicars. “Ektron really helped us with solidifying the technical specification and The C2 Group with the information architecture and design for the site. It was a good partnership fit. But we always kept in mind that our end goal was to have a product that we could build upon internally. That was really the driving factor for us.”

Planned as a phased rollout, work began in earnest on the UHS sites in January 2009. After

a rigorous planning and architecture phase, the main UHS East site was launched in late May 2009. Three weeks later the East Carolina Heart Institute site (www.eastcarolinaheartinstitute.com) went live, followed by the ViQuest Centers (www.viquestwellness.com) site. With the launch of the UHS intranet in August, UHS concluded its deployments, successfully launching five sites over a three-month cycle.

“Execution of our brand is very important,” says Vicars. “We have a web policy in place that states anything hosted on the public-facing site has to reviewed and approved by Marketing. We have the Ektron Workflow set up and we’ve had certain style sheets created to ensure consistent headings, bullets and so on. We defined a complete Style Guide up front and that Style Guide and the Workflow is what controls the consistency of the external sites.”

And how are UHS personnel and customers reacting to its redesigned Ektron site?

“People like the layout, the site design created by The C2 Group, and the general ease-of-use,” says Anderson. “And we especially like the

advanced features that we couldn’t get with our previous content management system, such as the drop-down menus we wanted.”

“From a content provider perspective, the usability of the Ektron platform has dramatically improved their experience,” Vicars adds. “The Ektron system is much easier to use. We’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about the site design, the site organization, and how user-friendly it is. We’ve had an overwhelmingly positive response.

“We had a very finite amount of time to do this project – to implement and deploy all the sites – it was one of the biggest undertakings I’ve taken on in my career. Overall, I’m very satisfied with how it’s gone. We’re coming up with new things to do and that’s what I’m really excited about, the flexibility we now have thanks to Ektron.”

“We think of Ektron as something of a best of both worlds’ hybrid solution,” remarks Ismael Amin, system analyst at County of Santa Barbara. “We were able to implement functionality immediately, but the software also allows for customization to meet our specific needs.”

The various County of Santa Barbara departments are still responsible for their own content – for example, press releases – but the use of Smart Form templates helps to ensure that information is delivered in a consistent fashion. “We have over 100 people trained on the Ektron WCM solution,” adds Slayman. “All of them are able to post to our website without needing technical training. Essentially, we’ve taken the content updating process out of the hands of our technical people, who are freed up to focus on their primary jobs. Now, subject matter experts can post their own content. The Ektron solution has been very successful and efficient, giving us an improved process in

communicating with the public.”

“Altogether, we’re extremely pleased with the Ektron solution in answering our needs. It was the right solution for our site relaunch, as well as giving our departments ownership of their Web content,” concludes Jennifer Slayman. “Perhaps more importantly, Ektron has helped us meet the public’s need for up-to-date information during emergency situations. Nestled between Los Angeles and San Francisco and often referred to as the American Riviera®, Santa Barbara is considered one of the most beautiful counties in California. The County of Santa Barbara is governed by a five-member Board of Supervisors elected by the public. Under the leadership of the county administrator, the County’s operations and programs are

carried out through 23 departments and several Special Districts and Commissions.

“One of our goals for our new website was to present a single face of county government to the public,” notes Jennifer Slayman, IT project manager at County of Santa Barbara. “The previous County of Santa Barbara website was launched in 2001 with many departments maintaining their own sub-site and content. Within a few years many of those sub-sites had evolved a look-and-feel and messaging which wasn’t necessarily consistent with the overall County of Santa

Barbara site. While the new site would still keep all those departments under the County of Santa Barbara ‘umbrella,’ we wanted every area to offer a consistent visitor experience.”

Efficiency was also a key need. Rather than the multiple solutions, software and implementations that had characterized the

earlier site, County of Santa Barbara was looking for a platform that could be implemented easily and learned quickly by new staff members as they were hired.

After several devastating fires struck the county, Santa Barbara also understood the importance of their website for communicating emergency information to the public. “At various times, our web operations have moved from our day-to-day offices to our Emergency Operations Center and even to the UC Santa Barbara campus,” Slayman continues. “We wanted a content management platform where authorized personnel could update the County site anytime, from anywhere – even from their homes when needed.”
