Platform 1.0 - Mainframe and before  : centralized computing Platform 2.0 - Messaging, object orientation, SOA, EDA : distributed computing and internet Platform 3.0 - Platform 2.0 + next-generation middleware : the cloud

•  Cloud native •  Open Source •  API driven •  Mobile, social , App, *store is critical •  Polyglot programming model •  Event driven, analytics, big data is fundamental •  DevOps/ALM built-in

–  Continuous testing, integration, deployment

•  QoS - scalability, reliability, security •  Connect everything to anything (IoT)

Platform 3.0 features

System of Systems System of systems is a collection of task-oriented or dedicated systems that pool their resources and capabilities together to create a new, more complex system which offers more functionality and performance than simply the sum of the constituent systems.

- Wikipedia

Modern Applications are System of Systems

(SoS)

Gartner View of Systems of Systems

Forrester View of Systems of Systems Systems of record are technologies that manage and store transactions, content, and processes.

Systems of engagement are technologies that directly support customer interactions through software.

Systems of automation are technologies that intelligently manage physical products, networks, and infrastructure.

Case Study: eBay - High performance middleware platform for online shopping

eBay was looking for a scalable middleware platform to connect their backend services with their main online portal .

Product

Challenge •  eBay was looking to move away from a home-grown middleware

solution to an industry proven ESB. •  The solution demanded a lightweight deployment model with

flexibility over artifact deployment, ESB node management and cluster administration.

•  Benchmarked 10 ESBs proprietary and open source, and WSO2 ESB was the only product that supported their performance and manageability requirements.

Solution •  A high availability ESB clusters capable of handling billions of

transactions per day (average 4-6 billion transactions per day right now – 2014)

•  Reduced Cost of Ownership compared to managing internally •  Automated provisioning between Dev, QA, Integration and

Production deployments. •  Several pools of high-end WSO2 ESB servers provisioning one of

three use cases that support eBay’s various business functions: routing, orchestration, and service chaining.

•  eBay already has planned several future deployments with WSO2 including the use of REST gateway deployments and federated ESBs

Case Study: StubHub – Managing high volumes of data for viral businesses

StubHub needed an API centric architecture to become the worldwide destination for an end-to-end experience for fans

Product  Product

Challenge •  StubHub was missing out on potential channel of new business

revenue with a looming competitive threat from industry peers and newcomers

•  The solution demanded the development of an API economy strategy, and re-architecting a running business

•  There was a need for a scalable system, which while handling high volumes of data, also has the ability to constantly evolve as an agile system

•  It had to not only be a product, but a platform that can leverage broad third-party developers and businesses to thrive

Solution •  A high performance and scalable API management solutions system

that can handle high volumes of traffic •  A simple lifecycle model that can be customized and extended to

align with the company’s API strategies •  WSO2’s integration suite not only exposes existing capabilities, but

helps to deploy new systems to maximize value, analyze, results, etc.

Case Study: Trimble - Transforming the way the world works through innovative solutions for various industries

Trimble was looking for a connected platform to link many stakeholders via complete centralization

Product

Solution •  A centralized Trimble Platform as a Service (TPaaS), consisting

of various components available as a service including identity, auditing, transformation and routing

•  Each division, partner and dealer is a tenant in the multi-tenanted platform.

•  Each division has autonomy in creating flexible solutions that use the TPaaS components under their specific tenants.

Challenge •  Trimble has a large number of divisions that cater to various

verticals •  Each division has its own set of applications and customers,

resulting in a diverse set of applications and technologies •  A unified mechanism was required to service dealers, partners

and customers of Trimble, whilst increasing division autonomy, technology management and reducing time to market

Case Study: Boeing – Enhancing the management of applications and customers

Solution •  A platform that can create supporting profitability through integration

between airline and OEM data •  A solution based on open architecture and modular design •  Reusable app services and a platform to leverage analytics to

improve operation •  Unified user experience across distinct functional modules (i.e. Fleet,

Material services) •  Highly extensible architecture capable of driving strategy, people,

process and tools

Challenge •  Help airlines convert all the silo, non-standard data into common

data formats that can be shared in a variety of ways •  Ability to interface with a wide set of of Legacy, stove-pipe data and

applications •  A platform that can scale under high volumes of data whilst

supporting real time performance optimizations

‘The Boeing Edge’; a PaaS solution to reshape the way Boeing connects with its customers

Case Study: Al-ELM – Managing Identities and Ensuring Secure Online Transactions

Al-ELM was looking to implement a system that would streamline administration, improve productivity, and reduce costs

Product

Challenge •  The growth of the Unemployment Assistance Program; the original

project covered one program that enabled unemployed citizens to submit their requests

•  The Saudi government expanded the services to include several programs, which prompted the need to streamline administration to manage 4 million user identities

Solution •  The WSO2 Identity Server proved to be the most flexible and

customizable solution for ELM •  Since implementing single sign-on (SSO) through WSO2 Identity

Server, ELM has been able to significantly streamline the administration of user identities, as well as improve overall user experienceThe benefits also include improved productivity, increased security, centralized management, and reduced cost

•  In production since April 2013, the program SSO system manages about 4 million users with 2,000 login requests per second

The WSO2 Advantage

Complete platform - Data to screen

Componentized - OSGI-based, use what you need, grows with you, internally

consistent
