A LIFE SAVERSAFETY FEATURESIn order to enable the spiking operationto be carried out in perfect safety, theAccles & Shelvoke CABLE SPIKER has thegreat advantage that it can be remotelycontrolled at the moment of firing bymeans of a lanyard (rope) release. The operator can thus stand at a pointof safety and if by chance a "live" cableis spiked, the damage will be local tothe cable.

As the speed of penetration of the spikingpunch is so rapid, it has been found inpractice that even if a "live" cable isspiked, usually no damage to the cablespiker results. If however, the fault current happens to be extremely high,it may be that the actual spiking punchitself may suffer, but yet be capable of tripping a normally operating breaker.

This punch, is of course, easily replaceableand a spare can be fitted in a matter of seconds.

An added feature of the CABLE SPIKERis that the wide punch shears the cablepartially or totally, depending on thecable size, hence reducing additionalcable cutting effort.

APPLICATIONSThe CABLE SPIKER is suitable for usewith all types and voltages of powercable including single and multipleconductor laminated, polymeric,elastomeric, unshielded, shielded,concentric neutral, interlock armoured,steel wire armoured, leaded coveredetc., designs in either fixed or portableinstallations.

SCOPEWhen it is intended to work on anyElectrical Power Cable, either for thepurpose of carrying out repairs or fortapping or arranging additional feeders, it is vital that special precautionsbe taken to secure the safety of theemployees. After the cable has been made deadand connected to earth at the point ofsupply, the cable is cut, usually bymeans of hacksaw or cutters.

CRITERIAIt often happens that the cable to becut is distant from the circuit disconnect, grouped with other cablesand sometimes buried in the ground. In order to avoid any possibility of amistake and a "live" cable being cut,most authorities insist that a sequentialrigid four step procedure be followedwhich requires the disconnection ofpower at both circuit ends, identificationof cable markers, electronic instrumentationsignal checks and finally cablemechanical spiking. The authorities made the final stepmandatory which requires that a wideiron spike be driven, either with a hammer or an extended stick into thecable intended to be cut beforeallowing further work to proceed. If by any mischance a "live" cable isspiked, the resulting high magnitudeshort circuit current should trip out thefeeder circuit breaker.

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONSThis method was somewhat crude andthere is grave danger to the employeecarrying out the spiking operation,owing to the sudden thrust of substan-tial electrical fault energy capable ofexploding the cable and creating a highvelocity deadly spray of conductor,shield and/or sheath metal fragments.Even the sight of a fault flashover couldcause permanent blindness.
