What is LinkedIn?

• LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003.

• It is mainly used for professional networking. • As of 22 March 2011, LinkedIn reports more than 100

million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries.

• There are 840.000 Belgian accounts on LinkedIn.• The site is available in English, French, German, Italian,

Portuguese and Spanish.

Get Started

• If you want to develop your professional network, create a profile on www.linkedin.com

• Fill in all profile information. It looks like a resume and it actually is ... but a dynamic one!

• List all your jobs, link to companies and make sure to add a few lines of text explaining what were your main achievements for each position.

• Get in touch with your professional contacts (colleagues, customers, ...) via your address book or using LinkedIn “Search” functionality.

• Remember that LinkedIn works as any other social network, all your profile modifications or public interactions with other members or pages will be shared with your contacts. Check LinkedIn’s homepage to view your contacts’ latest moves.

• Don’t forget that you can print or save your resume as a pdf.

• Optimise your LinkedIn profile to make it easier for search engines to find you by using keywords in your headliner (read more).

100% completeness

• A 100% completed profile is more likely to appear higher in search results, increasing the chance other people will visit your profile and add you to their network.

• To achieve 100% completeness, you need:– A current position– Two past positions– Education– Profile summary– A profile photo– Specialties– At least three recommendations.

Connections

• Visit your contact profile.

• Click on the yellow “Add” button.

• Be personal, don’t use the default text.

• Only add people you know or interacted with.

• Link them to one of your positions.

Recommendations

• This is were the dynamic part of LinkedIn comes into the picture.

• Recommendations reinforce your professional identity online and let your contacts highlight your strength and qualities.

• Ask your former colleagues, managers, customers to endorse you.

• Wait until the end of a project to ask your collaborators for a recommendation, include in your message a thank you note, and put forward what you liked during this common mission.

• Don’t forget to also write recommendations about others.

• You can manage your recommendations and resend those that haven’t been answered

Introduction

• Introductions let your contact users in your network know who are two degrees away from you (meaning contacts of your contacts)

• Access the profile of the user you’d like to contact.• Click on 'Get introduced through a connection‘.• Pick one of your 1st degree mutual contacts to introduce you.• Send a message to both the 2nd and 1st degree contacts explaining why you’d

like to get introduced.

• You can send up to 5 introduction requests with a basic LinkedIn account.

• Watch the second part of this video for more info about “Introductions”: http://bit.ly/LIintro• This procedure being somewhat complex, emailing or calling your mutual contacts might be a better

solution to get introduced.

Status updates

• You can share anecdotes, titbits about your professional life with your network by updating your current status on a regular basis.

• Status information will also appear as a new element on your profile page.

• Make sure to add links to your status updates for those who would like to know more about what you are currently working on.

• By linking your Twitter and LinkedIn account, you can also tweet your LinkedIn status to your Twitter followers or automatically post your tweets as your LinkedIn status (be careful with the latter as tweeting a lot could be seen as spam by your LinkedIn network).

Companies

• You can follow your target companies on LinkedIn.• By doing so, you will receive updates in your news stream on their

new developments, business opportunities, and job offers.• This gives you access to the employees’ list. Contact them (carefully)

to know more about working conditions within the company.

Add presentations to your profile

• If you have a SlideShare account, you can import your existing presentations into LinkedIn in order to give a multimedia edge to your profile and position yourself as an expert in your field.

Groups

• Joining and participating in groups is a great way to expand your network and position yourself as an expert in your field.

• You can join up to 50 groups but a best practice would be to focus on just 3 or 5 to start with.

• Make sure you subscribe to the groups’ daily or weekly updates in order not to miss any discussions.

• Participate in discussions and share your knowledge, don’t use groups just to promote yourself. Help others and others will help you in return.

Who visited your profile?

• On the right sidebar of your profile, you will find a link allowing you to discover who visited your profile during the last few days and how often your profile appeared in search results.

• To see the full details and statistics, you need a LinkedIn premium account.

• Personalise your LinkedIn url: http://www.linkedin.com/in/lastnamefirstname. Then include a link to your LinkedIn profile within your email signature and print it on your business card ...

• LinkedIn offers you the opportunity to create profiles in different languages. Translate your profile if you think that could be useful for some members of your network.
