Biographical Scrapbook of Charles Darwin

Introduction

Charles Robert Darwin (February 12, 1809 – April 19, 1882) is known as a famous scientist who formed the basis of modern evolutionary theory. Serving as a naturalist on the HMS Beagle's five year expedition around the world, Darwin realized that many of the plants and animals that he studied on the Galapagos Islands were very similar to the plants and animals he studied on the continent of South America. From this observation, he created several theories:1. Evolution did occur.2. Evolution change was very gradual.3. Natural selection is the main way evolution occurs.4. The many species there are today are all from one life form. He called this “Speciation”

I chose to research Darwin because I don't know much about him. I would like to know exactly what he accomplished and how he created the theory of evolution.

Diary Entry

July 1818

I am a little over nine years old, and my mother died one year ago today. In the spring of last year, I was sent to Unitarian Chapel School, where I stayed a year. I have been told that I was much slower in learning than my younger sister Catherine, and I believe that everyone thinks I am a 'naughty boy'.

Today is November 24, 1859. Charles Darwin's new book, The Origin of Species, is a big success. It is also causing some controversy, because of contradicting religious views. The release of the book attracts widespread attention because of the book's readability. It is written so that an average person can understand it.

Medals

The Copley Medal, a medal that honors distinguished scientific achievements, was awarded to Charles Robert Darwin in 1864.
