Atlantis: The Final Mission• CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) -- Atlantis and four astronauts

thundered into orbit, July 8, 2011 on NASA's last space shuttle voyage, writing the final chapter in a 30-year story of dazzling triumphs, shattering tragedy and, ultimately, unfulfilled expectations. After days of gloomy forecasts full of rain and heavy cloud cover, the spaceship lifted off at 11:29 a.m. -- just 2 minutes late -- and embarked on the 135th shuttle mission. The crowd of spectators was estimated at nearly 1 million.

Tàu Atlantis được phóng lên từ Trung tâm vũ trụ Kennedy, bang Florida, mang theo bốn nhà du hành vũ trụ. Tàu vũ trụ con thoi này của cơ quan hàng không vũ trụ Mỹ NASA thực hiện sứ mệnh cuối cùng của nó, viết nên chương cuối của câu chuyện dài 30 năm đầy ắp những thành công rực rỡ, những bi kịch đáng tiếc, và sau cùng, những dự tưởng chưa thành của NASA. • When Atlantis touched down July 21,2011 at Cape Canaveral, Fla., the high-flying era of the space shuttles came down to earth as well. After 30 years, the shuttle program, which began on April 12, 1981 with Colombia, has ended with the 135th mission. Atlantis delivered the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module packed with supplies and spare parts to the International Space Station, and retrieved a failed pump unit and other items for the return trip. Atlantis went aloft 33 times, logging over 125 million miles. The last shuttle will become a museum exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center.

• Khi tàu Atlantis quay về trái đất, đáp xuống Cape Canaveral, Fla., ngày 21/7/2011, cũng là lúc kết thúc kỷ nguyên thám hiểm không gian của tàu con thoi. Sau 30 năm, chương trình tàu con thoi, bắt đầu vào ngày 12/4/ 1981, đã kết thúc với sứ mạng thứ 135. Tàu Atlantis có nhiệm vụ chuyển cho Trạm Không Gian Quốc Tế (ISS) các thiết bị kỹ thuật, thực phẩm, nước uống dự trữ và mang đến lắp ráp một mô-đun hậu cần đa mục đích có tên Raffaello, đem về một máy bơm bị hỏng cùng những thiết bị khác trong chuyến trở về. Tàu Atlantis đã bay vào vũ trụ 33 lần, đã bay được hơn 125 triệu dặm. Sau chuyến bay vũ trụ cuối này, tàu con thoi cuối cùng Atlantis sẽ được đưa vào phục vụ du khách tham quan tại Khu liên hợp du lịch của Trung tâm Vũ trụ Kennedy.
