Analysis of similar style magazine contents page

Use of logo and layout

Including the title on the contents page emphasises the genre of the magazine to readers. It also helps the magazine’s logo/title to become more recognisable if it is repeated as a set theme throughout.

The layout of text and photos are clear and ordered. The main of the text is situated to the right & to the bottom of the page with the editors column placed on the left. The page appeals to a younger audience by using more photographs than text to create an exciting look.

Language and cover lines

The language is informal but not too childish so that it patronises the audience- it is easy reading and therefore appealing to a younger teen audience.

“Id pose naked for about £100” would appeal to a younger female audience (especially teen).

An informal code of address is used on the contents page although it is slightly more mature than the cover page’s language.

One direction make the magazine very clearly Pop and will pull in many fans.

Fonts & Colour scheme

The masthead is in large, bold font so that it stands out- the same font is used on the cover lines also to create a house style.

The colour scheme follows on from the cover page which shows that their house style is consistent throughout. Blue and orange are used to signify purity and happiness with white used to keep the magazine clean looking and easy to read.

Choice of images

There are a large variety of images used on the contents page ranging from a large photograph of One Direction to close up shots of facial expressions. The diversity attracts readers as it looks busy and ‘full of gossip’ which appeals massively to their target audience.

The pop genre is emphasised throughthe magazine’s choice of photographsas they all represent Pop music. ‘Gaze theory’ could also come into play here as girls are attracted to the boy bandphotographs.

Not a lot of use of mise en scene- no props are used.
