AN INTRODUCTION TO LATIN AMERICAN REVOLUTION!
What Came Before?
The Enlightenment changed the world
The American and French Revolutions inspired cultures around the world to change.
The spread of nationalism led to a desire for independence (Who was responsible for its spread?)
So What Comes Next?
EVEN MORE REVOLUTIONS! Haiti Mexico South America
What was so special about the Enlightenment? As intelligent people began
discussing ways to improve society, the ideas of liberty and equality inspired independence from colonial domination
How was society set up in Latin America? (MEXICO AND SOUTH)
Peninsulares
Creoles
MestizosMulattos
Slaves
Peninsularers
The peninsulares (called because Spain is a peninsula), the wealthy Spanish-born citizens, were the smallest percentage of the population yet occupied the highest political positions in society.
Creoles
The creoles were Spaniards born in Latin America who could not hold political office (most powerful position) but could be army officers. (still a powerful position)
Together, these two classes possessed the wealth, power, and land in Latin America.
Three Lesser Classes
The Mestizos - mix of Spanish and indians
Mulattos – Mix of Spanish And Africans
Slaves
Does this kind of set up sound familiar at all?
Similar to the French Revolution, social class struggles and discontent played a large role in Latin American independence movements.
