The poetry in tagalog written in Latin characters appeared for the first time in areligious work directed to explain the basicdoctrines of the catholic faith: Memorial ofthe Christian life in language tagala(Manila, 1605). The work contained poems of three authors: Fernando Bagong Banta, writer and Castilian poet in tagalog and, thisare, ladino; an anonymous native poet and the author of the book, the monkFrancisco of San Jose. 7. San Jose denominates the Romance poem. The work takes each one from the Ten orders and inthe preface the work of San Jose appears a poemof Bagongbant praising. The poems of San jose follow texts in prosa like poetic summaries of thetaught lessons. Sometimes the poem of Bagongbant has considered the first work written in tagalo with Latin characters, although itwas united in fact of a poem in Spanish with theliteral translation after each line. 8. Gaspar Aquino de Beln is a Filipino poet andtranslator of the 17th century, author in particular ofPasyon, a famous poetic of passion, died narrationand resurrection of Christ. Place of Birth: Rosario, Batangas Filipino natives, generally were not taught Spanish, but the bilingual individuals, notably poet-translatorGaspar Aquino de Beln, produced devotional poetrywritten in the Roman script in the Tagalog language.Pasyon, begun by Aquino de Beln, is a narrative ofthe passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which has circulated in many versions. 12. This development marked the beginningof Indio literacy and thus spurred thecreation of the first written literarynative text by the native. These writers, called ladinos because of their fluencyin both Spanish and Tagalog (Medina,pp. 55-56), published their work, mainlydevotional poetry, in the first decade ofthe 17th century. Among the earliestwriters of note were Francisco de SanJose and Fernando Bagongbata(Medina) 13. But by far the most gifted of thesenative poet-translators was GasparAquino de Belen (Lumbera, p.14).Mahal Na Pasion ni Jesu Christo, aTagalog poem based on Christspassion, was published in 1704. Thislong poem, original and folksy in itsrendition of a humanized, indeed, anativized Jesus, is a milestone in thehistory of Philippine letters. 14. Ironically -- and perhaps just becauseof its profound influence on thepopular imagination -- as artifact itmarks the beginning of the end ofthe old mythological culture and aconversion to the new paradigmintroduced by the colonial power. 15. The indigenous form of the Pasyon was first set intowriting by Gaspar Aquino de Beln in " Ang Mahal naPasin ni Jesu Christong Panginoon Natin na Tola"("The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ that is aPoem"), written in 1703 and approved in 1704. The more popular version of the Pasyon is the"Casaysayan nang Pasiong Mahal ni JesucristongPanginoon Natin na Sucat Ipag-alab nang Puso nangSinomang Babasa" ("The History of the Passion ofJesus Christ our Lord that will surely Set Afire theHeart of Whosoever Reads it"). An 1852 erudition by Aniceto de Merced, El libro dela vida (The Book of Life), did not prove popular withthe masses. 16.
