STATUS OF SRI IN LIBERIA SRI is very important to post war Liberia who

research institution and government extension services are undergoing recovery; therefore with the introduction of the SRI it, is a great relief to the “End Hunger “ campaign launch by the government with much emphasis on rice production

The area SRI is been targeted for and been practiced is mainly in the lowland ecology

Production is been increased annually but with little outcome

The average yield per hector is 0.5 ton and the maximum is 1.5 ton

There are few actors such as government, Farmer Organizations, private sector, donors, INGO’s, and a researcher institution

COMPARISON OF SRI TO STANDARDPRACTICE

In Liberia we can not speak much on comparison since in fact we are just been introduced to it but from the write out we can say that it is adoptable and very little demand for inputs but with promising results in terms of yield. While the formal or business as usually practiced is labor intensive, high cost and very little yield.

MAJOR OR WOULD BE CONSTRAINTS TO SRI IN LIBERIA

Limited information and experience on SRI in the country

Inputs dealers feel SRI will take them out of business

Limited FO’s involvment on SRI in the country could make it hard to get this system to other farmers

PERSPECTIVE OF SRI IN LIBERIA

High expectation by smallholders farmers Government think this system will help them

achieved their goal on ending hunger using this system .

Many see this System as an end to losses and increase in profitability since in fact the yield is high

Many believed with introduction of the SRI it will reduce the production cost, put more money in the pocket and while input dealers see SRI as an attack on their businesses

EXPECTATIONS We expect from this workshop to learn from those country

in which SRI is been practiced their success and challenges

We expect to return back home with clear understanding of what SRI is and how it works and the cost associated with it

We expect that farmers in Liberia to benefit from it and take ownership of this system

We will learn the technology on how we can increase our yield from 0.5ton to 4ton and also reduce the high post harvest losses

Farmers will have access to SRI and improved seeds and will return to officially launch SRI in Liberia with the farmers taking ownership

That Liberia will be actively involved in the SRI at national and regional level mainly with the involvement of all actors
