  • 1.Undergraduate Synthetic Biology Project Team Olya Spassibojko, Sharlene Dong, Kyle Wheeler

2. iGEM is the premier international undergraduate synthetic biology competition. Students design and build simple biological systems made from standard interchangeable DNA parts. Interdisciplinary and multi-faceted College, high school, entrepreneurship divisions 3. What is Synthetic Biology? The bridge between biological science and engineering Design and construction of novel biological functions and systems Creation of synthetic components or reassembly of pre-existing genes 4. Who are we? 5. College Composition Arts & Sciences 23% Engineering 60% CALS 10% Human Ecology 4% Architecture, Art & Planning 3% 6. Year Composition Freshmen (2017) 3% Sophomores (2016) 38% Juniors (2015) 31% Seniors (2014) 21% Grad (2013) 7% 7. Major Composition Biological Engineering 20% Electrical & Computer Engineering 6% Human Biology, Health & Society 3% Operations Research 3%Biological Sciences 26% Chemistry 9% Mechanical Engineering 6% History 3% Computer Science 3% Statistics 3% Chemical Engineering 18% 8. Developed a field-deployable biosensor for detection of environmental toxins Top 4 in regionals, advanced to internationals Best response to an oil sands problem by OSLI 9. Biological Component Worked with Shewanella oneidensis Ability to transfer electrons across membrane through cytochrome proteins mtrA, mtrB, & mtrC Obtained mtrB strain Expressed behind an arsenite inducible promoter Detect current in microbial electrochemical system when arsenic is present. 10. Dry Lab Component Developed field deployable system Bioreactors held within environmentally rugged casing System ensures no release of genetically modified organisms System allows for remote monitoring 11. OrganoFoam Developed collaboration with Ecovative. Company that creates Styrofoam substitute using fungal mycelium Hope to use synthetic biology to improve marketability and production 12. Applications Improve marketability of biomaterial with carotenoid pigment genes and limonene scent Improve production by implementing antifungals to combat competing molds Our work can help future researchers work with the seldom studied group of fungi called basidiomycetes Applications include both biomaterials and pharmaceuticals 13. Recruitment November: information sessions December 1: application emailed to interested students January 10: application due January 27: new members announced 14. Get Involved!
