The New York City marathon is one of the most famous in the world, in part because it’s set in one of the most famous cities in the world. Here are some interesting facts about the renowned race:

1. The first marathon was held in 1970 and involved 127 participants who lapped Central Park four times. Today, the marathon draws more than 50,000 runners who cross through all five boroughs.

unimpressive prizes, including cheap watches and reused baseball and bowling trophies. These days the first-place winner takes home $100,000, and runners have the chance to receive time bonuses of as much as $50,000.

3. In 1976, the marathon was re-routed to cross through all five boroughs in celebration of the U.S. Bicentennial. The marathon has continued to honor this tradition ever since.
