Sailors of all nationalities have for hundreds of years been lured to this ultimate challenge...The Mount Everest of sailing...to sail around the world alone.

Many Australians have gone before to inspire, to challenge and realise their dreams, however only two, Jesse Martin and Vinny Lauwers have completed an approved or ratified solo global circumnavigation.

Maurice Contessi invites you to participate in his attempt to become the oldest Australian and only the third ratified solo unassisted Australian sailor to ever complete this journey. At the same time your involvement and support will help raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease.

M a u r i c e C o n t e s s iMaurice is a yachtsman, builder, husband and father. He has campaigned three keelboats in offshore races both in Tasmania and Victoria to win ocean races in all three. Some of his notable performances include winning the 2000 Melbourne to Hobart and surviving the storm ravaged 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

For Maurice achieving a solo circumnavigation in his Cole 43 yacht aptly named “Full Circle” will see him fulfill a long standing dream to beat his own demons and to raise awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

The experience, physical and mental preparation that Maurice has already undertaken will place him in a great position to complete this challenge.

Maurice made a decision in recent times to campaign for MND Australia (Motor Neurone Disease) when his dear friend and fellow sailor Doris Little was diagnosed with this terrible disease. Affecting over 1400 Australians at any one time, Maurice feels that it is his duty to bring this disease into the light through a sport he loves.

With an average of 10 Austral ians diagnosed with MND every week and approximately 10 dying each week from this d isease, i t is Maurice’s hope (with support of MND Austral ia) to raise awareness and funds to cont inue research to f ind a cure.

T h e C h a l l e n g eThis attempt will be conducted under the auspices of the UK based World Speed Sailing Records Council (WSSRC), the acknowledged international body for monitoring offshore sailing records.

To achieve this Maurice must complete the “ratified” distance of 21,600 nautical miles as set by the World Sailing Speed Racing Council.

Maurice will face all that mother nature will throw at him as he sets off in October/November of 2011 from Port Phillip Heads at age 53. Returning some 200 days later in an attempt to set two records;

1. Become the oldest Australian, at age 54, to sail non stop solo unassisted around the world.2. Become the fastest Australian to sail a ratified non stop solo unassisted circumnavigation around the world.

In so doing, Maurice will become only the third Australian to complete the course to the official guidelines set be the WSSRC.

T h e P a r t n e r s h i pMaurice is seeking support and sponsorship to cover all areas of his preparation and journey. With your support, this inspirational challenge and aim to raise awareness for MND will be met.

This attempt and record offers an outstanding and unique opportunity to showcase your brand on the world stage.

Media opportunities will be managed to ensure maximum exposure for your brand: logos on the yacht sails and hull, support team clothing, printed publicity material and website.

In addition to the above the Full Circle team will ensure you are part of the action keeping you updated with progress reports and visits prior to journey commencement, news and blog updates whilst at sea and presentations after Maurice’s return.

RTW - Round the World, eastbound and westbound 21600NM. 2 separate records. To sail around the World, a vessel must start from and return to the same point, must cross all meridians of longitude and must cross the Equator. It may cross some but not all meridians more than once (i.e. two roundings of Antarctica do not count). The shortest orthodromic track of the vessel must be at least 21,600 nautical miles in length calculated based on a 'perfect sphere'. In calculating this distance, it is to be assumed that the vessel will sail around Antarctica in latitude 63 degrees south.

A vessel starting from any point where the direct orthodromic distance is too short shall pass one single island or other fixed point on a required side so as to lengthen his orthodromic track to the minimum distance.

No starting point will be permitted more south than 45 ° south.1 degree of longitude at 63 degrees south will be taken as 27.24NM

W S S R C R u l e s

With or without assistance'Without assistance' means that a vessel may not receive any kind of outside assistance whatever except for 21.h. and 21. i. nor take on board any supplies (beyond the harvest of the sea), materials or equipment during an attempt. A vessel may be anchored or beached during the attempt, but any repairs must be made entirely by the crew without outside resources or materials. It is never permitted to take on board stores or equipment or get any other kind of help from another vessel whilst under way (except as 'i' Emergencies below).

Singlehanded'Singlehanded' means there is only one person aboard. If a singlehanded skipper accepts any kind of outside assistance (see 21e) then the voyage falls into the "singlehanded with assistance" category.

A b o u t M N D A u s t r a l i aMotor neurone disease (MND) which is known as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) in many other parts of the world, and as Lou Gehrig's disease in the USA, is a progressive neurological disease.

MND affects approximately 1400 people in Australia and thousands more - their carers, families and friends - live daily with its impact. On average every day in Australia at least one person dies from MND and another is diagnosed.

MND Australia is the national peak body for MND care and research in Australia. The MND Australia network comprises of six state Associations, representing all states and territories, and the research arm of MND Australia - the MND Research Institute of Australia (MNDRIA).

By providing a national peak body for MND in Australia, MND Australia is committed to:

• Lobby for excellence in all services provided to all people affected by MND• Facilitate and coordinate dissemination of information• Create reciprocal supportive and informative links with research organisations• Ensure increased awareness of the issues facing people living with MND• Enhance the quality of life for people living with MND

MND Australia is a member of the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations, the peak body for national organisations who support people living with ALS/MND.

MND Australia members work together to advance, promote and influence local and national efforts to achieve the vision of a World Free From MND.
