EXPO 2017 IN ASTANA, KAZAKHSTAN
One of the largest international expos of the decade is coming to the capital of Kazakhstan. On Nov. 22, 2012, the 156 member nations of the International Exhibitions Bureau (BIE) met in Paris and decided by an overwhelming majority vote of 103 countries that EXPO 2017 will be held in Astana. “I want to inform you that we have just achieved another big victory for our country,” a beaming President Nursultan Nazarbayev told a special press conference in Paris when he announced the news. “This is the greatest achievement at the international level of Kazakhstan’s independence.”
EXPO 2017 is a recognized expo, also referred to as an international specialized expo, and is part of the World’s Fair system. Recognized expos are smaller versions of the Universal expos commonly referred to as World’s Fairs. Recognized expos center around a particular theme and are held between World’s Fairs, which occur every five years. Kazakhstan has chosen the theme “Future Energy” to promote and discover sustainable, global energy solutions.
Hosting recognized expos, like hosting universal World’s Fairs, World Cups or the Olympics is a major coup for any nation. The events bring hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue and immeasurable international exposure to the culture and economy of the host nation. Countries launch major multi-year lobbying efforts to convince the International Exhibitions Bureau that their nation captures the zeitgeist of the moment and is best suited to represent the world and the chosen theme. Kazakhstan launched such an effort and was eventually chosen over the Belgian city of Liege, which received 45 votes.
ABOUT ASTANA Astana is a modern city with a favorable environment attractive for tourists and comfortable for residents and guests of the Kazakh capital to live in.
Astana became the capital of new Kazakhstan in 1998 for a variety of reasons. By the end of the XX century, the country’s former capital Almaty was facing a heap of difficulties hampering further development of the city: the problem of overpopulation (over 1.500.000 inhabitants); traffic congestion; deteriorating environmental conditions. Moreover, compact planning of the “southern capital” in practice, restricted modern development of the city.
The choice was made in favor of Astana due to a number of decided advantages: vast urban area, favorable geographical location - close to the country’s main economic centers, significant demographic potential, well-developed transport infrastructure and the relatively favorable environment.
Astana is the second coldest capital city in the world after Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, a position formerly held by Canada's capital, Ottawa, until Astana attained capital city status in 1997.
Astana has an extreme continental climate with warm summers (featuring occasional brief rain showers) and long, very cold, dry winters. Summer temperatures occasionally reach +35 °C (95 °F) while −30 to −35 °C (−22 to −31 °F) is not unusual between mid-December and early March. The city also holds the record for the lowest air temperature ever recorded in Kazakhstan (−51 °C (−60 °F)). Typically, the city's river is frozen over between the second week of November and the beginning of April. Astana has a well-deserved reputation among Kazakhs for its frequent high winds, the effects of which are felt particularly strongly on the fast-developing but relatively exposed Left Bank area of the city.
Overall, Astana has a humid continental climate The average annual temperature in Astana is +3.5 °C (38.3 °F). January is the coldest month with an average temperature of −14.2 °C (6.4 °F). July is the hottest month with an average temperature of +20.7 °C (69.3 °F).
BAITEREK - A SYMBOL OF MODERN ASTANA
Kazakh legends have it that on the World River bank, there grows the Tree of Life, called Bayterek. Samruk the holy bird of happiness is flying to it to lay a golden egg in the nest, located on its top. The egg symbolizes the Sun, granting life and hope. But beneath, there is Aydakhar, a wicked dragon, hiding among the roots, and wishing to eat the egg.
This is a Kazakh version of the universe. Quite recently, Bayterek, a folklore symbol, was embodied in a beautiful tower, resembling the ever-lasting fight of good and evil. The Bayterek monumental structure was opened in the very center of Kazakhstan capital in 2002. It ushered in a new stage in the people’s life, becoming a symbol not only of Astana, but also of the whole country.
The tower’s total height is 97 meters, excluding a basement floor, which houses aquariums, Bayterek Gallery and a small café. The tower is supported by 500 piles and its weight exceeds 1,000 tons. Thereat, a large glass ball on the top of Bayterek is 22 meters in diameter and weights almost 300 tons. Inside the tower there is an elevator able to lift the visitors to the height of 86 meters, to the panorama hall with beautiful view of Astana. The hall is occupied by a wooden globe with 17 petals, symbols of the world’s religious movements, and an impression of the palm of Nursultan Nazarbaev, Kazakhstan’s first President. The Bayterek architect is Akmurza Rustembekov .
THE PALACE OF PEACE AND RECONCILIATION
The Pyramids do not mean only Egypt, but now also Kazakhstan. Quite recently in year 2006, Astana opened the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation, built in a form of a regular tetrahedron. People assign an epithet the “Eighth Wonder of the World” to this pyramid. And really it has something to surprise: built by the famous architect Norman Foster, it uses golden section proportions in its design: the faces of the base are 62 meters long while the height is also 62 meters.
In contrast to the Egyptian Pyramids, consisting only of separate burial chambers, the Pyramid of the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation includes a concert-opera hall, conference hall, exhibition galleries, green house, and so on. All of them are notable for fabulous decoration, consisting of various panel pictures, sculptures, paintings and installations. The largest conference hall is called “Cheops Atrium”. Its total area exceeds 2,000 sq. m. At the top of the pyramid, there is a small conference hall – the “Cradle”, the place which hosted the famous World Religions Conference.
The Palace of Peace and Reconciliation is a Kazakhstan’s truly unique structure, whose blazing faces, in the best way possible, decorate the capital. What is more, the building’s cupola phosphoresces brightly at night and like a lighthouse, indicates the way to unity of peoples and religions.
