What Is Systematic Theology?
As the priest-in-charge at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Father Sean Rousseau
oversees a Haymarket, Virginia, multi-generational parish community.
Before starting his tenure with this congregation, Fr. Sean K. Rousseau
earned a master of divinity with a concentration in systematic theology
from St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Overbrook, Pennsylvania.
What Is Systematic Theology?
Systematic theology refers to the grouping of religious concepts into
categories. Those who practice in this field seek out information about
specific topics in the Bible, Christian writings, historical documents, and
philosophy. They then summarize these issues so that people can easily
research them. Existing as early as the second century, this area of
scholarship provides a systematic approach to understanding the Christian
religion and its many facets.
What Is Systematic Theology?
Many consider systematic theology an important component of Christianity
because very few books contain all crucial data about a single topic. Even
essential tenets such as the Holy Trinity come from the interpretation of
several passages across different scriptures.
What Is Systematic Theology?
Within the overall field of systematic theology, there are numerous sub-
sections. For example, Angelology means the study of angels,
Pneumatology means the study of God the Holy Spirit, and Eschatology
means the study of the end times. Moreover, there is often crossover
between these branches due to interconnections between the various
ideas.
