• 11 “Go out and stand before me on themountain,” the LORD told him. And as Elijahstood there, the LORD passed by, and amighty windstorm hit the mountain. It wassuch a terrible blast that the rocks were tornloose, but the LORD was not in the wind.After the wind there was an earthquake, butthe LORD was not in the earthquake.

• 12 And after the earthquake therewas a fire, but the LORD was not inthe fire. And after the fire there wasthe sound of a gentle whisper. 13When Elijah heard it, he wrappedhis face in his cloak and went outand stood at the entrance of thecave. And a voice said, “What areyou doing here, Elijah?”

• 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his facein his cloak and went out and stood at theentrance of the cave. And a voice said,“What are you doing here, Elijah?” 14 Hereplied again, “I have zealously served theLORD God Almighty. But the people of Israelhave broken their covenant with you, torndown your altars, and killed every one ofyour prophets. I am the only one left, andnow they are trying to kill me, too.”

• 15 Then the LORD told him, “Go backthe same way you came, and travel tothe wilderness of Damascus. When youarrive there, anoint Hazael to be king ofAram. 16 Then anoint Jehu grandson ofNimshi to be king of Israel, and anointElisha son of Shaphat from the town ofAbel-meholah to replace you as myprophet.

• 17 Anyone who escapes fromHazael will be killed by Jehu, andthose who escape Jehu will bekilled by Elisha! 18 Yet I willpreserve 7,000 others in Israelwho have never bowed down toBaal or kissed him!”

God said to Elijah turn back and…
