Torah, I.S.B.E 1. Torah ("Law"): Heb: Torah is from Heb: horah, the Hiphil of Heb: yarah. The root meaning is "to throw"; hence, in Hiphil the word means "to point out" (as by throwing out the hand), and so "to direct"; and Heb: torah is "direction." Heb: Torah may be simply "human direction," as the "law of thy mother" in Prov 1:8; but most often in the Old Testament it is the Divine law. In the singular it often means a law, the plural being used in the same sense; but more frequently Heb: torah in the singular is the general body of Divinely given law. The word tells nothing as to the way in which the Law, or any part of it, was first given; it simply points out the general purpose of the Law, namely, that it was for the guidance of God's people in the various matters to which it relates. 24. Torah The Hebrew word Torah may be referring to human direction, teaching, instruction, or Divine, either written or oral. 25. What does Torah mean in Hebrew? (An insight from Dr. Eli) Leviticus 11:46 This is the law [torah] regarding the animal and the bird, and every living thing that moves in the waters and everything that swarms on the earth, What does Torah mean in Hebrew? (An insight from Dr. Eli) The word Torah most often refers to the Five Books of Moses. Although the Torah contains many stories, such as those of Cain and Abel, the Exodus from Egypt, as well as the story of Abrahams life, it also contains various laws, statutes and commandments. But what does Torah actually mean in Hebrew? Simply put the word Torah means teaching, instruction and even direction. The root of the word comes from the verb LiRot, which illustrates the idea of hitting a target while throwing/shooting something. Yours, Dr. Eli, [email protected] 26. Ritual Purity in Israel, The Archaeological Study Bible The Archaeological Study Bible on page 166 says; "Israel's purity laws (Lev 1115), the details of which are unparalleled in any other ancient near Eastern literature, reminded the Israelites of the gaping divide between themselves and their holy God (cf. 10:3) and of God's burning desire for them to become like him in purity (11:4445; 19:12; cf. Jesus words in Matthew 5:48). These laws also taught the Israelites that there uncleanness resulted not from demonic powers, as was widely believed in the broader world around them, but from disobedience to God's law. Even more fundamentally, uncleanness or ritual impurity (the condition that barred an individual from God's presence in the sanctuary) was a state that occurred in all people from time to time, simply by virtue of their human nature (cf. Lev12; 15). 30. Central Theme Of Leviticus Lev. uses the word uncleanness more times than any other NAS book (9 Xs). Why Did God Make These Distinctions Between Clean And Unclean Foods? Some think that God was arbitrarily testing the Israelites. This would be to test their obedience. Some think there was a pagan association with eating the unclean animals which God did not want. Some think it's all a large allegory. That somehow certain animals represented bad characteristics like gluttony or dirtiness. Many think that God did it for hygienic reasons, that before the advent of antibiotics and other modern medicines, people were better off to avoid the unclean animals.
