Why Did God Make These Distinctions Between Clean And Unclean Foods? Some think that God was arbitrarily testing the Israelites. This would be to test their obedience. Some think there was a pagan association with eating the unclean animals which God did not want. Some think it's all a large allegory. That somehow certain animals represented bad characteristics like gluttony or dirtiness. Many think that God did it for hygienic reasons, that before the advent of antibiotics and other modern medicines, people were better off to avoid the unclean animals.
