FROM THE PASTOR…

We've been moving rapidly in the last 40 days through the life and gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Together as a community of Mission San Luis Rey, we've remembered his passion, sacrifice and at last, on Easter Sunday morn-ing, his victory over death! This is the morning I want the Mission bells to ring out, to proclaim to everyone in Oceanside and the world. He lives! He is alive! This cen-tral idea is what makes all of us who we are, stewards of this very, good news. It is hope for every man, woman and child. This is not all there is. We are traveling togeth-er to a des na on, a full life together with God in His Heaven. Doesn't it feel good? But a er the joy of Easter Sunday, comes the reality of Easter Monday. The chocolate bunnies and hot cross buns are gone. The beau ful Holy Week Liturgies that everyone worked so hard in the parish to create together are now a memory. That special me we just shared with our brothers and sisters, families and friends is over. Memories. Pictures in digital cameras. What hap-pens next? How do we keep the proclama on, "He is Alive!" going in our hearts, on our minds, on our lips? What are our plans? Although they lived nearly 800 years ago, St. Francis and St. Claire of Assisi have some wisdom to share with us on life a er Easter. When they stepped out of their comfortable, ordinary lives, they did so in joyful imita on of what Jesus did. They worked hard to shed anything and everything that would keep them from their quest. Money? Didn't need it. Family? They both stepped away. Their response was radical. Sha ering. Bold. But they could only do what they were doing by suppor ng each other as they tried to live simply, humbly, dependent only upon the generosity of God. And in doing so, they found joy and a new life, a new mission. On this beau ful Easter, I invite all of you to reach out to be support for each other. Be the strength for the journey needed by the other members of your parish community. Be the ministers, the volunteers, the prayer teams, the small faith communi es, the helpers. Li up those who are doing three, five or more ministries by stepping in and saying, "Here I am, Lord!" I can do a li le more, with the grace and help of God. Together, let us walk in the light of Christ and the example of our Brother Francis. To follow Christ to the cross and beyond, into the new life that has begun this Easter. It's impossible to thank everyone for their gi s of me, talent, prayer and treasure shared with our community this Lenten season. Please know that I li you all to the Lord in my prayers, and ask him to fill you with every grace and heavenly blessing.

Fr. David Gaa, OFM

SEEKING Easter Sunday is a day all about seeking. The early Chris an communi es gathered around the Apostles, seeking more about the life and ministry of the Lord Jesus. Saint Paul told the bap zed Co-lossians to “seek what is above.” Mary of Magdala went to the tomb, seeking to find the Lord’s body so that she could anoint it. We come to church on Easter Sunday seeking many things. For some of us, this is a once-a-year journey, when we seek connec on with the founda ons of the Chris an faith. For others, this day is the culmina on of a long journey of Lenten repentance. For the newly bap zed, this is the first day of a new life filled with promise and expecta on. Whatever it is that we seek, let us be inspired by the disciple whom Jesus loved who, when he saw the wrappings of cloth inside the empty tomb, “saw and believed.”
