- He is shown to be feminine in the text as he shows a more sensitive caring side compared to the other male

characters “Edgar stood on the heath weeping silently.”- - he is quickly irritated when it involves Heathcliff and

Catherine “he looked vexed” however it also shows how he will never reveal his true annoyances to Catherine and that he is submissive to her again questioning his

masculinity this may have been done to make him seem inferior to Heathcliff.

- - He seems naïve, as he see’s Catherine’s outburst and immediately wants to marry her anyway, his first show of

submissive behavior.

“Soft featured” – This again questions his masculinity and makes the reader think of him as more feminine and

suggests more about his personality.

“beside whom my master looked quite slender and youth-like” – this description again compares Heathcliff and Edgar, the novel seems to be a constant comparison

between them, in a way it seems that Bronte is trying to show the reader why Catherine loves Heathcliff compared to her love for Edgar which is a shallow affection. By doing this it makes Catherine and Heathcliff ’s relationship seem

more passionate and real adding to the drama and love aspects of the novel.
