The Parable of the Prodigal Son 11 And he said, “There was a man who had two

sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything.

“But when he came to himself, he said, ‘How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants.”’ And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let

us eat and celebrate. For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.’ And they began to celebrate.

“Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. And he said to him, ‘Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound.’ But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him,  but he answered his father, ‘Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him!’ And he said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found.’”

Partner up! It was radical for the Jewish disciples to address God as their

Father. Because you have been reconciled to God through forgiveness of sin and are now His child, you can talk to Him as your Father. Acknowledge who God is and understand who you are.

From these Scriptures, describe God’s reception to you as you come to Him to speak with Him. Remember, He’s not like your earthly father: he’s perfect.

This (true prayer is offered through faith) Christ shows also here with the word: Pray to thy Father in secret, etc., and afterwards more distinctly, where he says: Our Father who art in heaven, etc. For this amounts to saying that our prayer is to be addressed to God as to our gracious, kind Father, not as to a tyrant or angry judge, etc. Now no one can do that unless he has the word of God, that he wishes to have us call him Father, and that as a Father he has promised to hear and help us, and that he have this faith in his heart, so that he cheerfully dare call God his Father, and pray with hearty confidence, and rely upon this prayer, as assuredly heard, and await help…..

It is, however, as has often been said, surely the very best prayer that was ever uttered upon earth, or that any one could conceive, since God

the Father gave it through his Son, and laid it upon his lips; so that we dare not doubt that it is extremely pleasing to him. He admonishes us at the very beginning, both concerning his command and his promise, in the word: “Our Father,” etc., as the one who demands from us this honor, that we are to ask from him, as a child from its father, and he wants us to have the confidence that he will gladly give us what we need; and this is further also a part of it, that we glory in being his children through Christ; and thus we come in accordance with his command and promise, and in the name of the Lord Christ, and appear before him with all confidence--Luther , “Commentary on the Lord’s Prayer” http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/SPLC/Commentary%20on%20the%20Lord's%20Prayer%20-%20Matthew%20-%20Luther.pdf

Page 11: 11.08.19 the lord's prayer Intro-our father who art in heaven

Wilt thou forgive that sin where I begun,Which was my sin, though it were done before?Wilt thou forgive that sin, through which I run,And do run still, though still I do deplore? When thou hast done, thou hast not done,For I have more.

Wilt thou forgive that sin which I have wonOthers to sin, and made my sin their door?Wilt thou forgive that sin which I did shunA year or two, but wallow'd in, a score? When thou hast done, thou hast not done,For I have more.

I have a sin of fear, that when I have spunMy last thread, I shall perish on the shore; But swear by thyself, that at my death thy SonShall shine as he shines now, and heretofore; And, having done that, thou hast done;I fear no more.

When we pray, Jesus explains, we are not to be like the unbelievers, who stammer or babble, battalogew. They think that God will hear them because of their rapid-fire, staccato speaking, containing many words and repetitive phrases.

One has only to think of the Hindu prayer wheels, sending one prayer upwards with each revolution, or the massive, repetitious prayers of many of the modern world religions to get his point.

Do not pray like that, Jesus tells us, because our heavenly Father knows what we need before we even ask him; he is not hard of hearing, What follows is notable for its economy of phrase and lack of repetition.

Our Father, Who art in Heaven:Pater hmwn o entoiv ouranoiv, agiasqhtw ) to ono

ma sou, Notice our Lord's priority: his first concern is for

the reputation of God the Father, for his kingdom to be established, and for his will to be accomplished upon the earth exactly as it is now in heaven. He begins,

The kingdom of God is more than kingship: it implies a king, of course, but also a people, and the establishment of the king's right to reign over them,

Here, in the very heart of the Sermon on the Mount, the King is himself declaring what he expects of those who inherit and inhabit his kingdom, the standards by which his subjects are expected to live.

LP.1st Petition: God as Holy Father

Page 15: 11.08.19 the lord's prayer Intro-our father who art in heaven

God can be honored in much the same way by being referred to as “Father” just as with a parent.

He can be approached with boldness, but with reverence of His position on the throne in Heaven.

Glory is given to Him by acknowledging that His name is sanctified and glorified by those that come to Him Rice says that while prayer is usually asking for something, it should also include “worship, adoration and submission”

LP.1st Petition: Exclusivity of Family

Page 16: 11.08.19 the lord's prayer Intro-our father who art in heaven

The prayer of the righteous man is one that originates in adoption.

The Holy Spirit brings an awareness of God’s holiness in spite of his close personal nature.

We are purely His own, but not without a sense of awe and a constant awareness of the need for resurrection.

Just as Christ calls Abba from the depths of the cross, we may have access with the blood of our Brother.

LP.1st Petition: Spirit of Adoption

Page 17: 11.08.19 the lord's prayer Intro-our father who art in heaven

God being Our Father means that he already knows our needs and will effect His will without hindrance.

We gain the debt of discipline and are reward for our awareness as children.

We are comforted as we orientate ourselves toward God and recognize the miracles he works CONSTANTLY.

Our Father who art in heaven. What does this mean? With these words God

tenderly invites us to believe that He is our true Father and that we are His true children, so that with all boldness and confidence we may ask Him as dear children ask their dear father.

SS: Our Father who art in heaven

Page 21: 11.08.19 the lord's prayer Intro-our father who art in heaven

In what way does the word Father in the Lord's Prayer encourage us to pray?  The word Father tells us that God loves us and wants us to pray to Him confidently and without fear.

1 John 3:1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.

Rom. 8:15-16 You received the Spirit of sonship. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

2 Cor. 6:18 1 will be a Father to you, and you will be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.

Heb. 4:16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.

Ps. 103:13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.

Pray: Lord, Almighty God, You are the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, from whom every good and perfect gift comes. Since not everyone has faith, I pray: implement and maintain in my heart through the workings of Your Holy Spirit the true knowledge of Your dear Son Jesus Christ. Increase it from day to day, so that I, too, may be filled with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding. May I walk worthy of You unto all pleasing, being faithful in every good work, and increase in such knowledge according to Your glorious power in all patience and long-suffering with joy. Amen. (Johann Habermann, 1516-90)

What does the word our impress upon us when we pray, "Our Father“? In Jesus all believers are children of the one Father and should pray with and for one another. 723 Eph. 4:6 [There is] one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.

Gal. 3:26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.

James 5:16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

W pray with and for one another.

Page 24: 11.08.19 the lord's prayer Intro-our father who art in heaven

What do the words “who art in heaven” say about God?  These words assure us that our heavenly Father as Lord over all, has the power to grant our prayers.

Ps. 124:8 Our help is in the name of the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Luke 1:37 Nothing is impossible with God.

Acts 17:24 The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth.

Pray: It is Your will that we should not individually name You Father. But we should call You “our Father” together and pray for all

with one accord. So give us a united and brotherly love that we may know and consider all Christians as brothers and sisters. Together may we pray to You, our beloved Father, for each and for all, just as one child speaks for another to its father. Amen. (Martin Luther, 1483-1546).
