A little about me…
Been a developer now for a little over 5 years
Prior to that I was in the Marines for 4 years
Used to work on the gov side of things, now I’m in the private sector
I love to golf, death metal, read, Linux, Raspberry Pi and FOSS
I’m easy to talk to
I help run the MCJUG at where I work in Rockville
I’m working on creating a charity with old computers, Linux, and families in need
Why did I start the meetup?
Well there wasn’t one.
I really like the Pi cause it always my inner redneck to take things even further
I also like what the Pi brings to the table Teaches kids and adults
Programming Computer science Robotics electronics
Raspberry Pi DC meetup
I plan for us to always meet here at Difference Engine
Might meet on the weekends??
Created a twitter and github account for it
Try to be quick about replying to comments
Looking for anyone to give a talk Don’t have to be an expert Just be passionate about your project/talk The more you guys talk, the better the meetup is
Currently having issues with that in the MCJUG
Next month or the one after I should have someone from Dexter Industries to talk about GoPiGo
My project
A homemade redneck security system
Super easy to setup and install
What you need Raspberry Pi Webcam Internet hookup Power supply
Steps
Install Motion sudo apt-get install motion I’m using Raspbian
That’s it.
Make changes to the config file /etc/motion/motion.conf
Things you might want to change Daemon on Width and height Where the files are stored File naming standards
View from another network
Make sure to set up ‘port forwarding’ on your router
Helps if you set a static ip for your pi
This will tie the port set up in the config file to the one set on your router.
Will allow you to view the cam from any other network
Why do this?
Cheap way to keep tabs on what is going on in your apartment, house, or where ever
Compare the cost with Nest Nest – 1 webcam = $199 10 days of video history = another $100/year 30 days of video history = another $300/year
You are in control of all of the software
This is super easy to build on My next plan involves a doorbell that turns on the
cam
